Selecting A Birthday PG-13

Post by cassysj »

I do not own any recognizable characters no copyright infringement is intended.

Josef watched his fledgling drink from her first live freshie.

“Take it easy Solita. You’re getting over-excited.”

Solita was pulling the blood from the young man’s wrist. It tasted so good. A thousand times better than the bags of dead blood he gave her in the beginning and a hundred times better than the live blood she’d been given in a glass. She could feel his emotions. Arousal with just a hint of fear, it was intoxicating.

Josef was monitoring the human’s heart rate.

“Solita, stop.” Josef ordered.

She retracted her fangs and growled at Josef. He helped the freshie into the next room and told the girls to give him juice and after he rested have the limo take him home.

Josef smiled at her. “Very good.”

Solita pouted. She didn’t want to stop drinking but last week she stole a bag of blood and he wouldn’t let her eat until sundown the next day. It was the longest fourteen hours of her life.

“Don’t sulk. You can have another human in three hours.”

She sighed. “I used to get a bottle every two hours.”

“Fine. You can have a bottle in three hours and a human in six.”

“You are the meanest sire ever!”

Josef laughed. “Kid, you have no idea. I know you’re hungry but you can’t eat everyone you see. You have to learn self-control.”

Solita nodded. “I know. You’ve told me that a thousand times.”

“You are so cranky.” Josef teased. “You have a very important decision to make, what date do you want for your new birthday?”

“Can’t I keep my own birthday and just change the year?

“No. Josef said firmly. “That life is over. You have 364 other days to choose from.”

Solita smiled. “What about leap year?”

“No self-respecting vampire ever chooses Feb 29. Now you were 34 years old but you look great so I’m making you 26.”

“Twenty-six? How long do I get to keep this name?”

“Anywhere from ten to twelve years. Consider yourself lucky, I have to change every five to eight years.”

“I’ve known you almost nine years.”

“I’m at the end of this life, soon Josef Kostan will disappear but enough about me. Let’s talk about your birthday.”

“What day did you pick?”

He laughed. “Days. I’m currently using October 16th.”

“How did you pick that one?” Solita asked.

“I started on December 31st and every time I changed my birthdate I moved it back one day.”

“That’s a great idea. I want my birthday to be January 1st.

“That’s my New Year’s Baby. New life, new year. Have you thought of your new name yet?”

“Not yet. Can’t I keep Solita?”

“It’s too unusual and no “S” names. I am sick and tired of the letter “S”.

Solita laughed. “Yes, master. I’ll come up with a new name by the end of the week I promise.”

“Good. Now I want you to write one hundred times. My birthday is January 1st, 1988.”

“Are we playing Headmaster/Naughty School Girl?”

Josef kissed her. “Maybe later. This is an exercise. That date has to be real to you. We start by making it physically real. It will become natural for your hand to write that date. You also need to write two hundred times 1/1/88. If you make any mistakes you have to start over.”

“I stand by what I said before. You are the meanest sire in the world.”

“Your personal information is life and death. Identities can be compromised with the smallest mistake. I won't have you new life end because of carelessness.

Two weeks later.

Shouts of Happy New Year, were heard all over Los Angeles. Josef and Solita were enjoying some blood flavored champagne.

“It’s after midnight.” Solita said. “Where is my birthday present?”

Josef pretended to look shocked. “Was I supposed to buy you a gift?”

“Of course you were. Honestly how could you forget? My birthday couldn’t be any easier, January first.

Josef retrieved a wrapped jewelry box from his jacket pocket.

“If you didn’t remind me, you might never have gotten it.”

Solita opened the box and inside was a gorgeous sapphire necklace.

“You’re the best sire in the world.”

Hee hee hee... she changed her tune just a little bit! But I have to agree with her... Josef IS a very strict sire!

I hadn't thought about it, but it makes sense to change your birthday when you change identity. So our little fledgling is a New Year baby... good choice. I wonder what her (non-S) :snicker: name will be...? :chin:

it's an interesting question, cassy, about what dates they choose as their 'birthday'. as usual, you write some of the most fun dialogue on the board.

cheers.

This is such a cute story. I love that we see Solita as a fledgling. You even included that Josef is tired of the S-names. And the new birthday is a good idea, easy to remember for the first incarnation of the fledgling. Josef is a strict sire, but he needs to put his foot down with her. I love this!

Hmm, Jo, I think you're on to something.
Spoiler:
The way she wrestled down that alligator was a dead giveaway.
Or maybe she's
Spoiler:
a former freshie. But then she can't tell us or the tar pits will be her new residence.

Alle - Josef is very strict but it comes with the paranoia. She's a baby and he literally got her into this life so like a parent he is giving her structure and rules. Josef strikes me as the type that when he left humanity behind it was completely behind him and his birthday will never be used. The reason I had Josef move backwards in the year which seems out of character since he never looks back is because if he was a January baby he wouldn't want to be near that month for a long time.

Luxe - Thank you. I love writing the lighter side of life or unlife.

francis - I am thinking of making a "Solita Vamp" series so this was a good chance to give her a birthday.

Spoiler:
Josef warned me about the alligator photo. Carol if you make that public people will begin to suspect.

The counting back a year / identity thing is a great idea. Going by that he doesn't seem quite so old; he's not even to the half-way mark of the year yet.

This is delightful!

The last time I read about Solita it was not a happy time.

She has arrived in L.A. and met Josef and made the transition to a new life.

Wonderful story!

Thank you

Jenna

This is an interesting take on how vamps 're-invent' themselves....we all knew that they changed their names, but changing the birthday does make the new persona seem more real.

Very clever and cute, Carol

I never thought about this before, but it totally makes sense to change the birthday along with the name.

Great answer to the challenge! Thank you! :flowers:
