Shared Suspicions... Challenge #135 PG

“What fairy tale did you tap to get that gem?”
“No fairy tale. While a historian from the vampire council was here last week, we were talking vampire history. Millennia ago, vampires and humans lived together, cared for each other.”
“Right. One of us gets hungry, he asks a neighbor if he can tap a vein?”
“Or she. It was a barter system based on blood. We need blood, and are stronger and faster than humans. It worked for a long time.”
“What finally broke up the love fest?”
“Humans began fearing and doubting vampires.”
“Humans kept disappearing, huh.”
“Don’t know. Didn’t happen overnight. Remember the fable of the scorpion wanting to cross a lake? He asked a turtle or frog for a ride. It says, ‘You’ll sting me and I’ll die!’ but the scorpion says, ‘No, I’d die, too! I promise not to sting you if you take me across.’ The deal was struck. All goes well until they’re halfway across when the scorpion stings his benefactor. As they‘re sinking, he says, ‘Why? You’ll die, now!’ and the scorpion says, “I couldn’t help it! It’s my nature.”
“Everybody knows that one…”
“But they don’t know that the scorpion was originally a vampire wanting to cross a desert and the other animal his human brother with a covered wagon. It was a cautionary about trusting vampires. You can’t trust vampires.”
“People trust you. I trust you.”
“I’m a vampire. I don’t trust me.”
“Another one of your many issues, Mick. Does Josef trust you? Logan? Guillermo?"
"Vampires, Beth."
"Do you trust them?"
"To a point."
Beth sighed. "That's the best I'm gonna get, isn't it?"
"Now? Yeah. It is. I love you, you know."
"Then, I'll take it."

What an interesting idea! A mutualistic relationship between humans and vampires makes sense - sustenance for one, and protection for the other.
And then, the bottom line: How can Mick trust others when he doesn't trust himself?
This was fabulous Jenna!

Totally agree!
When Mick first told Beth about how he became a vampire, she remarked that 'he must find it hard to trust' He trusts other people far more than he trusts himself and he is such a trustworthy person!
I've always felt that the direction Moonlight was going to be heading in was in moving toward a reunification of these two divergent branches of humanity.
Thank you for reading this late Challenge entry!

Thanks for commenting. This was one of those things that were going in for the challenge and I didn't get pared down sufficiently in time for the deadline. At first I was going to forget about it, then in other challenges we were free to submit late entries, so here it is.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this!

Cool concept, Jenna. As anyone who's taken folklore classes knows, there's always a story behind those old tales. Why not a vampire story?

This was great! I love the twist on the old tale, and this last line is just so fitting:
Amazing work!

Very interesting folklore, it fits very well to vampire-human-relationships. And of course Mick doesn't trust himself, that's his whole dilemma with Beth.

Thank you. Ever since viewing Moonlight, that particular little tale has always had a vampy feel to me, hence this little piece.
You are most kind for reading and leaving the nice comment!

Thank you.
I think that vampire history is just another facet of what we would have learned a bit about in subsequent seasons.
Thanks for reading and leaving the wonderful comment!
