'Water & Power' Flows To Screen

Richard Montoya of Culture Clash to write, direct film version of play
By Marc Graser
Five years after "Water & Power" bowed on stage in Los Angeles, Richard Montoya, of the comedy troupe Culture Clash, is producing a film version of the play.
Montoya is writing, directing and producing the drama that stars Jacob Vargas, Enrique Murciano, Nicholas Gonzalez and Clancy Brown about a California senator who must help his crooked cop of a brother out of a crime that has backfired on L.A.'s eastside.

Murciano plays the politician, nicknamed Water, while Gonzalez is the cop, Power. Both were given the nicknames by their father (Vargas), an employee for the city's Department of Water and Power.

Film, whose locations cover South Central and East Los Angeles, is based on the stage play of the same name that Montoya penned and debuted in 2006 at the Mark Taper Forum, in L.A.

The pic was adapted as part of the Sundance Feature Film Lab in 2007. Producers are now hoping to premiere the film at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Montoya's recent credits include "Larry Crowne," "Nacho Libre" and "Falling Down."

Pic is produced by Mark Roberts through his Roberts/David Films shingle (behind "Strangers with Candy" and "Danika"). The film is executive produced by James Flach, and co-produced by Marco Santiago Jr. for SunCast Entertainment. Lorenzo O'Brien and Emilio Rivera serve as co-producers.

"We're very excited to take on this wonderfully written screenplay, which is helmed by an artist with a powerfully unique and distinct voice" Santiago Jr. said.
