These visuals are fabulous!!! You mentioned that Valentino held his riding whip as he danced the tango....did you notice the spurs!!!?

That's a brave woman to dance the tango with a man with spurs!!

Okay, a few good pics for this chapter.

These were taken at a favorite campsite, above Santa Fe (it’s a good ways up toward the Santa Fe ski basin, several miles past the wonderful Japanese bathhouse). Yes, really. It is beyond beautiful in the mountains there, and I could easily include a whole bunch of photos of the aspens, etc. from that area.

As a point of information, Santa Fe is at about 7200 ft. above sea level (2134 m, for our metrically oriented members).

If you go out the road to the ski basin, it passes through Hyde Memorial State Park, about 8 miles (13 km) from Santa Fe. By the time you get to the park, you’ve climbed to 8,500 ft. The ski area is another 8 miles and 2000 feet on up the mountain, so we are talking some serious elevation change.





And here’s a pic that I just had to use to represent Reza in her riding gear.

Wow - what gorgeous pictures! I've never been up that way, although I've been to the general area several times. And I love the riding clothes.

As I mentioned in the chapter 10 thread, I was in a restaurant in New Orleans, and saw a painting that sure looked to me like Stephen's three graces...although not the one Nash painted, as will be obvious from looking at it. And I think the artist must have had Lou Lou standing on a box!



Sorry the angle is not better--the pictures from straight on had large glare spots.

Seems to me that Josef(Stephen) got so enamored with his three graces that he did the same thing with clothes and with another artist. Maybe something bad happened to the other painting? Ah no, you're not greenleaf9, right?

This is by another painter who was in Santa Fe in the Twenties, although not part of Los Cinco Pintores, named Sloan. It's such a wonderful evocation of the crowd in the Plaza on a summer night, I thought I'd post it:

Chapter XIII. Camel Rock

Seriously, there is a Camel Rock, north of town on the main highway. It's a little overshadowed now by the huge casino across the road, and I think they have it fenced off...but when I first saw it, it was not, and I'm guessing it was really more accessible in 1923!



Not quite the right colors, but something similar to Thea's outfit for the drive...
