FULL MOONLIGHT---Ch 27---Hungry Like The Wolf.
**************************************************************

DISCLAIMER: I don’t own ‘Moonlight’, or any of its wonderful characters. I’m just taking them out for a run!

SUMMARY: A multi-chapter, action-adventure, intended as a Second Season of ‘Moonlight’. It features Mick, Beth, Josef, Logan, Talbot, Simone, and some really big werewolves, among others. Rated PG-13 for some language, and violence. This particular chapter is a very hard PG-13, leaning towards R, for scenes of bloodshed and gore.

SPOILERS: Follows on from all 16 episodes of ‘Moonlight’, as aired on CBS. This story could have been its Second Season……if I owned ‘Moonlight’, CBS, and Warner Bros, that is………which I don’t. (((Sigh))) Follows on from Allegrita’s very steamy & beautiful FanFic, ‘Presto Agitato’, Ch 1 & 2. (Mick and Beth finally ‘seal the deal’, and become lovers.) ‘Presto’ would have become epi #1 of my Second Season! Also follows on from Desdemona’s awesome FanFic, ‘Silver’, Ch 1 thru 7 only. (Talbot finds out about vampires in general, and Mick in particular, the hard way! He also shares ‘The List’ with Josef and Mick.) ‘Silver’ would have been epi #2 of my Second Season! And lastly, I’m borrowing the original character of ‘Karl’ from his brilliant creator, Eris, and her many wonderful Fanfics, with her kind permission.

Ready? Okay! Let’s go!

****************************************************************

Beth saw her enemies going for their pistols, as she crashed through the window and came at them. Her long, powerful legs carried her across the room in a heartbeat…..but not before one of the Legion’s assassins
succeeded in clearing his holster, and getting off one round. His weapon was a Glock 23, so it had no safety to disengage. A 40-caliber bullet left its muzzle and rocketed towards Beth.

The golden she-wolf heard the gun boom, and felt the impact of the bullet as it slammed into her broad chest. The pain was intense, burning through her muscles and lungs like a wildfire.

This pain only made her angrier. Snarling, she rose off her forelegs and drove forward into her enemies, her powerful haunches pushing her at the hated threats to her Pack’s safety. Her forearms became missiles, tipped with the razor-sharp talons of her hand-like front paws.

Beth saw the shooter’s pistol-slide eject the spent bullet casing out of its side. Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion. A wisp of smoke rose from the weapon.

An instant later, the golden wolf’s enormous forepaw erupted from the shooter’s back……right between his shoulder blades. Clutched in the glistening, gore-covered, talons were the man’s sternum, heart, and a large section of his spine…..in that order. A shower of blood splashed across the wall behind the shooter. His second shot went wild…..another deafening boom….blowing through the wall to his right. Splinters flew. The assassin twitched and gigged convulsively for a split-second, impaled on the she-wolf’s left forearm, his feet swaying above the floor. The air escaped his destroyed lungs in a bubbling whoosh. Then he became still……having never even had a chance to scream.

The dead man’s two companions made up for that oversight……each screaming at the top of their lungs……as they both brought their own side-arms, also Glocks, to bear on the huge golden wolf. With her left forearm still occupying the first shooter’s chest cavity, Beth swiped her right hand at the second assassin. Ivory talons flashed, and an instant later, the second shooter’s right arm sailed across the room and landed on the floor with a wet thump, his pistol still clutched in its death grip. He wailed a guttural scream as the wolf’s massive jaws snapped shut over his head and shoulders. One shake, and he too became still.

Before Beth had a chance to drop her second kill, the sole surviving human in the room got off two point-blank shots. Boom……Boom……. The rounds impacted her right shoulder region, and she swayed with the force of them. Searing pain flared anew through her chest. She snarled and spat out the second assassin’s lifeless body. At the same time, the first assassin’s corpse slid off her left arm, crumpling to the floor in a heap beside his cohort. Dropping the first shooter’s heart and spine from the grip of her left hand-like paw, the huge she-wolf turned to confront her next enemy, her golden ruff bristling erect with fury.

Her head, chest, and forelegs covered in crimson gore, Beth reared back onto her powerful haunches and swung on the remaining assassin, gutting him from sternum to hip with a single blow. The man’s third shot went wild…..exploding through the ceiling above them…..as the wolf lunged at him, catching his upper torso in her massive jaws. She shook him violently side to side, and heard his spine snap…… but, by that time, he was already dead. Her first blow had severed the man’s abdominal Aorta, an artery the diameter of a garden hose. His own racing heart had pumped his life’s blood out of him in seconds, gushing in time to its frantic beat, soaking the golden wolf, and pooling on the floor beneath her.

The burning pain in her chest made Beth feel woozy, and alittle confused……the room was starting to spin. It hurt…..it hurt so much! She was having trouble breathing…..and she could hear a disturbing gurgle in her own lungs with each breath. Bleeding, she thought, I’m bleeding into my lungs.

As she dropped the last assassin’s mangled body, a piece of something snagged on her lower fangs. Before she had a chance to think about it, her jaws snapped shut, and she swallowed it reflexively. Part of Beth’s mind, her humanity, recoiled in horror from the line she knew she had just crossed.

But the wolf….the wolf liked it…..alot. The….tidbit…..had been the sweetest thing the wolf had ever tasted……. it had immediately strengthened her, and eased her pain slightly. The room stopped spinning….. Beth tried to focus on that benefit, and avoid thinking about what she had just done.

She heard shouts, and pounding footfalls, coming from other areas of the office building. More people, more of the Legion, converging on her position. More battle was imminent. Her jaws gaped in an open-mouthed snarl, her blood-soaked muzzle wrinkling, her huge conical fangs gleaming……. the morsel forgotten.

The searing pain in her chest had begun to cool, replaced by a throbbing ache, and a strange cramping sensation. As she wheeled around to face the oncoming threat and stepped towards the door, her snarl caught in her throat and she coughed violently, retching and hacking, throwing her muzzle downward. A gout of blood, her own blood, splashed onto the floor in front of her, and was accompanied by dull clicking sounds.

The golden she-wolf peered at the puddle of blood before her…….there were three mushroomed bullets in it. Puzzled, Beth cocked her head….. Did she just cough up the bullets she had been shot with????? So it would seem. The blood was mixed with greenish phlegm. Huh…..

She realized her chest was feeling increasingly better…..the burning pain had stopped, and the cramping ache was also fading rapidly. Her breaths no longer gurgled……she had apparently cleared her lungs.

No time to ponder this development……. The footfalls of multiple people were rapidly approaching the room’s closed door. Beth’s tall triangular ears flattened against her head and her furious snarling resumed, as her attention returned to the enemy. She heard the breaths and heartbeats of five people arriving outside the door. The golden wolf crouched, gathering herself, powerful muscles bunching.

The knob moved slightly as someone touched it………. Beth launched herself at the door, crashing through it in an explosion of splintering wood, and slamming into the wall on the other side of the hallway outside the door.

Two men in the hall were killed immediately, crushed between the 700 pound wolf and the wall behind them. They crumpled, like broken dolls, to the hallway floor as Beth stepped away and turned to face the others.

The golden she-wolf could smell the astonishment of the three men left alive in the hall. Clearly, they had not been expecting a werewolf….. They had heard the shots, the screams, the combat…..but they were expecting either a vampire, or a human gang……not a werewolf.

They stared at Beth for a heartbeat, their mouths hanging open in amazement. The hindmost fellow dropped a wooden stake…..it clattered to the floor and rolled, coming to rest against the wall.

A blistering snarl thundered from the huge wolf’s bared fangs. Her deep sapphire eyes glittered with fury. She crouched and sprang.
Her enemies opened fire. The reverberation of gunfire filled the building again, echoing throughout the rooms and stairways.

Beth was aware of multiple injuries to herself…… more searing pain each time a bullet slammed into her…… but it didn’t slow her down. The pain only fueled her rage. She went at the remaining three Legion members in the hall….lashing out, and cutting them down, with razor sharp talons, and fangs as long as a man’s fingers. It was over in just a few seconds.

As she turned from her grisly work, huffing and growling in pain, Beth noticed the sound of additional human heartbeats. An instant later, guns boomed again, and several more bullets slammed into her left shoulder and flank.

The pain was unimaginable…..her insides were on fire…… She roared in deep anguish, and spun on her haunches, looking down the hallway for the shooters. Her vision was becoming alittle blurry, and Beth had to struggle to focus on her enemies. She had to stop them from ever being able to hurt her Mick again….. That was all that mattered…… She had to stop them……here……now.

She saw a group of humans gathered at the end of the hallway, where it emptied into a large room filled with desks, chairs, and computers. Two men were holding the handguns they had just fired, smoke drifting lazily up from their barrels……and a slender young woman was just raising a large semi-automatic pistol.

Beth blinked, squinting to focus on the dark-haired young woman……she recognized her…..she had seen her before, briefly…….in the memories of Roger, Josef’s human Gatekeeper. This was the woman who had stumbled past the end of the driveway…… Pretending to be ill, or injured…… she had been the bait that had lured Roger away from his post….. lured him out to where he was attacked and drugged. That had been the first step in the ambush that had nearly killed Mick and Josef. It had all begun with this woman………

Beth’s sapphire eyes narrowed and her lips drew back, exposing huge canines, as she snarled and launched herself into a charge down the hallway towards the woman, and the men behind her…….. The floor vibrated with the impacts of the huge she-wolf’s galloping stride.

The woman, unflinching, took aim and fired. The pistol boomed and bucked in her hand, the slide ejecting first one casing, then another……

Beth felt as if someone had just hit her in the head with a wrecking ball…… Her vision spun…..confusion enveloped her like a dense fog in which she could neither see, nor understand.….. Then…….Beth’s consciousness winked out……..

Her front legs buckled beneath her, and she pitched forward in midstride. The she-wolf’s powerfully muscled chest and brisket crashed to the floor, followed by her belly and haunches. Her momentum kept propelling her forward down the hallway on a ghastly SlipN’Slide of blood. At last, she slid to a stop, her forelegs folded partially beneath her body, and her hind legs splayed out behind her. Her muzzle and head were twisted to the right at an awkward angle. She was still a few feet away from where the hallway emptied into a large office area.

*****************************************************

No one moved. The slender woman kept her pistol trained on the enormous yellow wolf, but she didn’t fire again. It seemed unnecessary. She inched forward slowly, and the men moved with her. Behind them, three more men rose from their desks and moved cautiously towards the downed wolf, each keeping a hand on his own sidearm.

The woman eyed the yellow wolf cautiously….. It wasn’t breathing, and her two kill shots were evident….one through the beast’s left eye, and one in the center of its broad forehead. Yes, it was dead……she was certain. She lowered her pistol slightly and sank into a crouch a couple feet in front of the huge golden creature, her eye’s sweeping over the carcass.

“Is it dead?”

The woman flinched at the sudden voice behind her, then frowned in irritation. “Looks pretty dead to me.” She replied in a caustic tone.

One of her co-workers inched forward further and crouched down beside her. “I don’t get it…….”, he whispered, “Why did it attack us?! We’ve never bothered any Pack. Why would they risk getting themselves added to our to-do list? What’s it even doing in a place like LA?”

“I don’t know!”, the woman snapped, turning to glare at him, “Do I look like I know?!”

***************************************************

The she-wolf wasn’t breathing…..she didn’t need to….. Her red blood cells were so efficient in their oxygen carrying capacity that she could hold her breath for hours, if need be. She was not conscious….. her powerful body had taken massive damage, and was struggling to repair itself…… Her huge heart only beat 2 or 3 times a minute, as her body worked to re-wire her brain’s heavily damaged Motor Cortex…...

******************************************************

“Somebody should check its pulse……just to be sure it’s dead.”

The woman snorted and shook her head. “Go ahead! Have at it, dumbass! As long as you don’t mind waking up all shaggy tomorrow! Personally, I want a haz-mat suite before I touch that thing…..It’s covered in blood.”

*************************************************

One deep blue eye slid open slowly. The humans didn’t notice. The gigantic she-wolf remained motionless on the floor..…… She was confused…..and she could only see out of one eye. What she saw was the floor, and the wall……….. She could hear the voices of the humans around her, but she couldn’t understand what they were saying…………

Her large, powerful heart began to beat alittle faster.

The wolf struggled to remember what had happened…….but could not…… She didn’t understand……anything…....language made no sense……. But she knew rage….. white hot fury……… that much she understood. She remembered that the creatures around her now were enemies…..that they had invaded her Territory and hurt her Pack……… She just didn’t remember how. These things surged through her awareness as raw feelings and instincts…….since language was beyond her grasp……

What the wolf could not know, or understand, was the horrific damage sustained to the frontal lobes of her brain. The bullets taken there had knocked out all higher brain functions…… Beth, as a person, was off-line. Reason, language, memories, impulse control…… all off-line.

The Limbic System was in control now…..the “animal brain”, the seat of the four “F’s”. Only two of the “F’s” were in the wolf’s awareness at that moment………. She wanted to fight, to kill her enemies, defend her Pack and her Territory..….. She wanted to taste the enemies’ blood…. to feel them come apart in her jaws…… And, she needed to feed…..her body desperately needed fuel to repair itself.

***************************************************

The slender woman noticed the yellow wolf’s flank expand as the creature drew in a slow breath. Her eyes widened as she sucked in a startled breath of her own, preparing to shout a warning to her co-workers……….but she was too late……….

**************************************************

In an instant, the massive golden she-wolf heaved to her feet, razor-sharp talons scrabbling on the floor, her shaggy head swinging to face her enemies. Her one good eye, her right eye, locked on to the human right in front of her, and, before the woman could raise her weapon again, the wolf lunged forward and crushed that enemy’s slim chest in her powerful jaws with one snap.

Guns boomed all around her, as the golden wolf dropped the now lifeless body of the enemy woman. She felt more searing impacts……. each rocking her side to side with its force..……. and more rage, as she turned on the surviving enemies.

*************************************************

Phelan ran with all the strength and speed that he had in his massive lupine body. He raced through darkened streets and allies, following young Beth’s scent. As he galloped along, what he could only describe as a……. a bad feeling……crept over him, coiling itself around his heart like a serpent.

He was going to be too late…….he knew it…….something bad was happening……and he wasn’t going to get there in time………….

*******************************************************

The huge golden she-wolf snarled as she violently shook the last human’s body in her jaws. His screams ceased as his neck and spine snapped. She dropped his limp carcass and stepped back.

Confusion still reigned supreme in her damaged brain……. She had no idea who she was……. There was no sense of self……no memories…..beyond the simple….. knowing….. that the slain scattered around her had been her deadliest enemies…..and the savage glee at having been victorious against them. Her golden fur was soaked in their blood, and she stood in a rapidly spreading pool of the stuff. The floor was awash in it.

The she-wolf slowly blinked her one good eye, and, with the last of her foes defeated, she allowed herself to feel the crushing pain of her many grievous injuries.

Still angry and hurting………. but with no enemy left to punish……the huge wolf threw her muzzle into the air and howled. It was a guttural baying of rage and pain. She wandered aimlessly around the large room…… tottering, limping, slightly unsteady……….. through the blood and corpses of her defeated foes. She howled again and again, venting her fury, and her pain.

*************************************************

Outside, still standing under a streetlight on the next block, the two gang sentries hushed as the unearthly baying tore through the night. They exchanged nervous glances. The smiles they had worn during the shooting and screaming faded quickly. There were no screams now…..no more gunshots…….only those terrible, clearly angry, baying roars.

They each took an involuntary step backwards, as the hairs rose on their arms, and on the backs of their necks. It sounded like the fight was over……like those in the office building had lost……but the beast was still angry…… very angry…....perhaps looking for more targets?

Both gang-bangers shivered involuntarily, and with one more exchanged glance, they backed away from the lamp post’s pool of light, and turned, walking rapidly away into the darkness of deserted streets and alleys.

******************************************************

The she-wolf winced, and whined softly, as her muscles cramped and spasmed all over her body. She growled, clenching her teeth, as the skin beneath her thick pelt began to ripple and twitch of its own accord. She heard a soft cascade of clicks and taps hitting the floor all around where she stood. Turning her great, shaggy head, and squinting with her one good eye, she saw what appeared to be many tiny lumps of glistening metal scattered on the gore-smeared linoleum beneath her.

Then……the muscles in her right shoulder twitched and jumped again, and, while she watched in confusion, a patch of sodden yellow fur fell out, exposing a rising area of angry reddened skin beneath. Another tiny lump of shiny metal pushed itself through her skin, with a soft pop that she could both feel and hear. It fell to the floor with a klink. The wound closed, leaving the small patch of bare pink hide in its wake. She didn’t understand what this meant……or why it was happening…..but she was aware that the burning of her many wounds had diminished alittle.

Her head still throbbed and burned, however, and she whimpered as that pain seemed to intensify. Then…..there came two more twitching pops, this time on her face. She yelped and shook her aching head, stumbling backwards, nearly falling. Two more gleaming lumps of metal hit the floor in front of her. She regarded them with renewed confusion, but her head began to feel better after that………….

The one thing she did clearly understand was the hunger that clutched at her belly……she was starving……she needed meat…….

Instinct told her that the very best possible food for her……the meat that would restore her health and strength the fastest……was unavailable. She had no idea what that food source was……she only knew that it was not available. Her nose, and instincts, informed her of that fact.

Instinct also told her that the second best food source for her was readily available all around her……..the enemy. She was hock-deep in the very meat she needed to heal her wounds and restore her strength.

The she-wolf reached out one taloned forepaw and snagged the closest carcass, dragging it towards her, and settling herself down on the blood-soaked floor. She sank her enormous canines into the carcass’ chest cavity, ripping it asunder and pulling out the heart. She bolted this prized morsel down whole, and then tore off another large chunk of meat, taking more time to savor the second mouthful.

Her pain began to ease further immediately, and strength slowly began to flow back into her trembling, exhausted muscles.

Claudia glanced, for the umpteenth time, at the GPS Monitor’s screen on her Hummer’s dashboard. The little red dot that was Phelan continued to move rapidly down city side streets and allies on the screen’s map. She continued to follow, paralleling the red wolf’s course, keeping pace with him, as they drew nearer to a truly seedy part of LA.

As the Lead Cleaner of the LA Tribe, this was all on her…….. If things went badly…..it would be her fault. She shook her head and snorted softly to herself, causing her two subordinates to glance at her briefly out of the corners of their eyes.

Werewolves! Really?? What had she been thinking?! How had she managed to so completely lose control of this situation? First, Josef had gotten by her with his pet she-wolf…… Beth……. fostering the creature as if she were his own Get, for shit’s sake! And, as if that weren’t bad enough, here she was now using yet another werewolf, Phelan…….. also a friend of Josef’s…….. to track down the wolfed-out Beth, and clean up whatever mess would be left in her wake.

Beth was of the Noble Line too……the AO-Neg blood type. That tremendously rare blood type conveyed a resistance to fire in vampires, but no one knew how it would effect a werewolf. It was a total wildcard.

Claudia shook her head and frowned deeply as she drove, starring out through the windshield. She hated being unable to completely control every situation……and there was simply no controlling werewolves. By their very nature, they were wild things……the embodiment of chaos. What had she been thinking? How had she gotten herself into this mess? The situation had ‘cluster’ written all over it.

*****************************************************

The she-wolf slowed, chewing her feast gratefully, savoring its heat and flavor. It was pure ambrosia. She was feeling so much better……the pain of her injuries was gone, and she was feeling stronger. She was finally beginning to feel full……satisfied. She was on her third carcass. Her thoughts were clearer now too……. She was finding it easier to think……and random bits of…..language……were starting to flit through her mind……

As she chewed and swallowed the last morsels of her meal, she glanced around the destroyed room. She remembered now why she had come here…..why she had fought……. These…..people……had tried to kill………someone she cared about very much……..her mate………her friends…….her Pack………….. This was HER territory…..and these………. invaders….. had brought unprovoked battle to her, and those she cared for………..

She blinked……and realized that she was now blinking with both eyes……..her left eye had healed. She could see much better………. Still alittle blurry, but she was seeing with both eyes now.

Sighing contentedly and dropping her kill, she shoved herself to her feet. She wanted to leave a…….message……… something that others like these enemies would understand. She needed them to know that THIS territory was protected.

Words……….. She would need words for that………

Her tall triangular ears pricked forward and her lupine brow knit in concentration. Her head still ached alittle. Words………. Yes…… She decided she knew some words that would adequately convey her message to her enemies………..

Padding forward slowly on the blood-slick floor, the huge wolf approached an empty wall, gazing up at it, thinking………. Yes….. This would do……….
She dipped her right forepaw into a gaping wound in the belly of one carcass, where blood had pooled. With her forepaw soaked in this grisly ink, the wolf lifted it towards the wall before her, rearing up on her hind legs. She began to write…..using her entire paw as a paintbrush…….. clumsy, childlike scrawling letters, brush-strokes punctuated by the wispy etchings of five enormous talons. Every few moments, she leaned back down to dip her right paw in the pool of blood again……more ink for her message.

******************************************************

Phelan rounded the corner at racehorse speed, not caring if he was seen, and accelerated down the empty street. His feelings of dread had continued to mount steadily.

The GPS Transmitter dangled and bounced in front of his broad chest, hanging from the makeshift rope-collar Claudia had fashioned for him. Its presence was annoying, but Phelan put up with it, trusting that the haughty female vamp, that Cleaner, would be along to back him up, as promised.

***********************************************

The she-wolf lowered her paw from the wall and dropped back onto all fours. She stepped backward slowly, gazing up at her work. She could read…..and understand…..what she had just written…..but………..

A wave of fresh confusion washed through her…….. Dipping her muzzle, she shuffled backward further, her claws scraping against the linoleum…… She shook her head, as if trying to dislodge an attacking swam of insects…….. She didn’t understand that, within her skull, her damaged frontal lobes were nearly healed………Connections were being reestablished. Identity, reason, memories……..all of these functions began to flare back into her awareness. Beth….. as a person……… was coming back on-line.

The she-wolf grew still, her half-tail hung limp behind her, her ears drooped slightly. Her almond-shaped sapphire eyes swept the room, taking in the destruction, and finally settling on one of the lifeless bodies………the one that had been her inkwell. Her deep blue eyes widened……. Her hind legs seemed to fail, folding beneath her……. She sat down hard.

*******************************************************

Phelan sprinted along the dirty side-street, hugging the shadows. Paper trash blew up and swirled about madly as he passed. His broad paws thudded rhythmically, and with deceptive softness, on the pavement as he ran. He careened around a corner and down a narrow alleyway, skidding to an abrupt halt just where the alley emptied back into another filthy street.

Beth’s scent was strong in this place…….his nose told him the young she-wolf had lingered in this gloomy alley for several minutes. The huge red wolf stood in the shadows, taking in the scents all around him. Those scents were not telling him good things…………..

Beth’s scent trail had left this dirty alley and headed across the street, where it entered a modest looking two story office building. Phelan eyed a large street-facing window which had been shattered inward. The interior was dark, and nothing moved within.

His hackles rose……. He smelled both silver and lead, mixed with the stench of gunpowder, gun oil, and blood……. lots and lots of blood. Most of it was human……but some of it was werewolf…..Beth had been hurt.

The massive red wolf sent up a silent prayer that Beth had encountered the lead….. and not the silver. Cocking his great shaggy head, Phelan listened to the seemingly silent building across the street. There was only one heartbeat inside…….a steady lub-dub, coming from a powerful heart nearly as large as his own. Beth…………

Sighing with relief, the red wolf stepped cautiously out of the alleyway and glanced quickly up and down the empty street, his brilliant emerald eyes reflecting the light of the nearest street lamp. He could hear muffled breathing, and rapid heartbeats, coming from the dilapidated neighboring structures ……humans…… but they all appeared to be hiding deep inside the interiors of their respective buildings. He heard a small child….a girl….. whimpering softly..…..followed by a frightened adult female voice trying to reassure and quiet her..……

Phelan’s heart ached for the little one…… Poor baby…………. He wished he could tell her that she was safe now…..… that the bad people were gone…..at least for now. But, he knew he could not do that……… He also knew that, in a neighborhood like this, there was a never-ending supply of bad people. Phelan snarled softly……..That was just one of the many reasons he hated cities. The child, whoever she might be, was growing up in a war zone, and there was nothing the great red wolf could do about that sad fact.

Certain that he was not being watched, Phelan returned his attention back to Beth. He loped quickly across the street and bounded through the shattered window of the silent office building.

Inside, the worn carpet beneath his dinner-plate-sized paws was soaked with shed blood, squishing under his 900 pounds as he stepped carefully. The huge red wolf paused long enough to scan the dingy room with his eyes and nose. Three bodies, all male, and all splashed in assorted parts and pieces from wall to wall.

Beth’s heartbeat was coming from down the hall. Phelan moved silently out through the splintered doorway into the hallway. Five more crushed and mangled bodies were scattered up and down its length. The floor and walls were splashed with copious amounts of blood……most of it human, but again, some of it was Beth’s. It was still wet and fresh. The bodies were all still hot……they had not been dead for long.

Stepping lightly over the dead, Phelan paced quietly down the hall towards a larger room. The only sound was the occasional light clicking of his huge curved talons on the cheap linoleum. He paused momentarily at the very end of the hallway. There was a lot of Beth’s blood here……a pool of it. She had been shot all to hell right here………… She had gone down right here……. The red wolf snarled…..

But……. She had gotten back up…….. apparently, much to the surprise of the humans in this larger room, with its desks and phones and computers……
The Irish werewolf swept the room with his eyes……. Six more broken human corpses were strewn about…… desks overturned, computers smashed……. Somewhere, a phone’s off-the-hook signal buzzed softly.

And Beth……the young golden she-wolf was nearly unrecognizable. She sat amidst the ravaged bodies, her head hung, starring at the blood-smeared floor in front of her. Her normally flowing and silky pale-gold fur was soaked and matted with the blood of her enemies. She did not look up, or acknowledge Phelan’s arrival in any way. She was covered with healing wounds, areas where the fur had either fallen out, or been blown off. The most notable of these was right between her eyes…….the fur was missing around a large angry pink dent that was filling in as Phelan watched.

He blinked as he realized what must have happened…….Beth had been shot in the head, at least once. No wonder she was not very responsive……. She was most likely in shock, and very confused. He wondered how much she would remember……..

Phelan stepped forward slowly, approaching the battered young she-wolf cautiously. She had been through enough……..he didn’t want to startle her……

“Beth?”, he murmured softly, “It’s me…….Phelan.” He stepped closer still, keeping his own posture relaxed and non-confrontational.

Beth didn’t respond. She remained frozen…..sitting on her haunches, her head hung, her tall triangular ears drooping. She continued to stare blankly at the floor before her hand-like front paws.

“Beth…..dearheart? Can you hear me?”

Still nothing. It was like he was not there…… Dread gripped Phelan’s heart like a vice. Was the girl permanently brain damaged? The huge red wolf stopped in front of Beth and dipped his own great head so as to look into the she-wolf’s face. That was when he noticed the odd appearance of her left eye…….. It had a filminess covering the usually deep sapphire blue, in stark contrast to her right eye, which was as brilliant as ever. Clearly, the left eye had been injured, and was still healing. As he watched, the milky film slowly faded from the left eye’s cornea, until it was bright and clear again.

Beth had been very badly hurt, and was still healing…..that much was obvious…… Perhaps she just needed more time. New golden fur was beginning to sprout and grow, slowly filling in the many bare patches on her hide.

Sighing, and trying to be patient, Phelan glanced around the room again, his eyes slipping over the ravaged bodies. He was hungry, and all that fresh human flesh was a temptation..……it smelled wonderful…… but, with 500 years worth of self-control, he forced himself to ignore its siren call. He had been on a biped-free diet for a very long time now, and he intended to keep it that way.

That was when he noticed that they had another problem. As his eyes lingered on the closest corpse, a man, just a few feet away, Phelan realized that the body wasn’t just torn apart…….it was partly missing. Large portions of soft tissue, mostly muscle mass, were gone……no where to be seen. The corpse’s chest gapped open, and the heart was also missing, along with a couple other internal organs…..all the choicest pieces favored by carnivores. The guy had been eaten……by Beth……..

“Oh dear…..”, Phelan muttered softly to himself. He glanced back at Beth’s face. Her expression remained blank, and she continued to stare at the floor.

Phelan eyed the other corpses in the room. Two more of them, both male, had also clearly been fed from……… stripped of muscle mass, and several internal organs. “Oh dear…..”, he mumbled to himself again.

*******************************************************

Claudia parked the black Hummer in the alley beside the office building where, according to the GPS, she would find Phelan, and hopefully, Beth. The Lead Cleaner, and her two assistants, quietly exited their vehicle, their eyes, ears, and noses scanning the surrounding structures.

With a turn of the locked door knob, Claudia shattered the lock mechanism and pushed the alleyway door open. The trio of leather-clad vampresses slipped inside the attached garage. A black van was parked there, its silent engine still radiating heat. It had been in operation not too long ago.

Ignoring the vehicle, they entered the office itself through an interior door and made their way down a hallway. The smell of human blood hung heavy in the air like a fog, along with the stink of silver, lead, gunpowder, gun oil………… and the wild musk of werewolves.

The vampresses stepped over, and around, five bodies strewn just outside a side office, the door of which had been shattered outward from within. Glancing inside the room, Claudia saw three more shredded bodies. She closed her large, dark eyes and inhaled softly, her delicate nostrils flaring.

She saw Beth…..the huge golden wolf crash through a window into the room…… Saw the wolf quickly dispatch the three humans there, despite being shot several times…….. She heard Beth’s fierce snarling….. She heard the humans screaming…….heard the gunshots…………

Claudia’s eyes snapped open. Behind the dead, a picture window had been broken inward. Shattered glass littered the carpeted floor amidst the blood and body parts. A night breeze stirred softly through the open window, and the darkened street beyond was silent, save for the occasional rustle of a loose paper blowing along the sidewalk.

Turning from that scene, the three vampresses continued, following the trail of gore to the end of the hallway. Here they encountered a swath of werewolf blood just before the hall opened up into a larger communal office area. Claudia’s nose informed her that the blood was Beth’s.

Apparently, the Legion members had gone down fighting, and had succeeded in inflicting massive damage to the she-wolf before they were killed.

Her eyes drifting closed, the Lead Cleaner scented the air again, embracing the images and sensations that flowed within it……….

The golden she-wolf charging down the guns……she had been shot so many times…… She was in so much pain……. But the rage, the determination to eliminate the threat to her Pack, drove her on……… The world exploded around her as two bullets struck her square in the face…….. The physical damage was horrible….. The golden wolf went down…….she seemed dead…..and yet…..she was not…… She would not allow herself to be stopped……….she healed……….. Up again……… going at the startled enemy…….. The screams……more gunshots…..Beth’s roars of rage and agony after the last enemy fell before her fury………..

Claudia gasped as her eyes flickered open once more. Her two assistants were watching her with concern. The Lead Cleaner attempted to school her expression into its usually impassive mask, even as she swallowed hard, trying to calm her emotional response to what she had just seen, and felt. Claudia shook her head in amazement….. Beth, the young she-wolf, had shown such incredible courage in the defense of those she regarded as her Pack……Mick, Josef, and by association, all the vampires of the LA Tribe. She had been willing to die defending them……and she very nearly had………

The Lead Cleaner’s thoughts drifted back to the night of Beth’s first Shift…..how the young blonde had asked her to do whatever she had to do to keep her from harming Mick…..if it came to that…… She had wanted Claudia to kill her if it looked like she might hurt Mick. Claudia had been surprised then……and had begun to believe that maybe….just maybe…..she had underestimated the spunky little blonde. Now…..now she knew for certain that she had, indeed, grossly underestimated Beth…….both as a human, and as a werewolf.

Claudia stepped into the ransacked communal office area. Her two assistants following, stepping over the scattered, and abundant, human remains.

The massive red wolf, Phelan, turned to look at them as they entered, his large emerald eyes following their lithe movements. As Claudia approached, Phelan stepped away from Beth, towards the Lead Cleaner, and placed his horse-sized body between Claudia and Beth.

Stopping in her tracks, the Lead Cleaner eyed the big Irish werewolf, her expression questioning……

“Best to keep your distance, Lass…..”, Phelan said softly, his Irish accent thick with emotion, “The girl was shot in the head…… and she seems to have checked out without the luggage.” He turned his great shaggy head to look back at the she-wolf, still sitting, still staring blankly at the floor in front of her paws. “I get no answers from her…..I’m not even sure she’s hearing me…….” He hesitated before swinging his head back to focus on Claudia. “And there’s no tellin’ what she might do if she suddenly snaps out of it.”

The Lead Cleaner met Phelan’s gaze for several seconds, and then looked past him to where the big she-wolf sat………a bedraggled, blood-soaked mess. She took note of the three corpses closest to Beth…… all of them clearly missing large amounts of soft tissue. She blinked…..Okay……that could turn out to be a problem…..but she doubted it would.

After a few more seconds of contemplation, Claudia met Phelan’s emerald eyes again.
“I think it will be alright…..”, she said quietly, “Beth did this…..”, Claudia indicated the destruction around them with a sweep of her nimble hands, “…..all of this……..to protect us, the LA Tribe. We’ve become her…… Pack…….just as Josef had hoped. I don’t believe she would turn on any of us now.”

Phelan blinked, his expression far from convinced, “I hope you are right.”

The Lead Cleaner nodded and stepped past the towering red wolf, moving cautiously toward Beth. Her two assistants opted to remain where they were, with Phelan between themselves and Beth. They watched their boss nervously. Claudia stopped in front of the elk-sized golden she-wolf.

“Beth?”, the Lead Cleaner began, “Can you hear me? We’re here to help.”

No response. Beth’s graceful lupine muzzle remained pointed at the floor in front of her…... her head hung low, her tall triangular ears drooping.

The Lead Cleaner pulled the glove off of her right hand, then stuck her hand down in front of Beth’s nose, and snapped her fingers loudly several times. “Beth!”, she said sharply, “Come on! We have to get you out of here!”

Brilliant sapphire eyes blinked once, then twice……and the bedraggled golden wolf drew in a deep, shuddering breath.

Phelan snorted, “Now why didn’t I think of that?!”, he grumbled.

Beth lifted her elegant lupine head slowly, and focused on the black-clad vampress before her, triangular ears lifting and pricking forward, “Claudia?”, she rasped.

The Lead Cleaner nodded, “None other, my dear.” She looked the massive golden wolf up and down. “No offense, Miss Turner…… but you are an absolute mess…… We have to get you cleaned up. Josef would stake me to his rooftop like a solar panel if I let you go home looking like this…….”

“Am I going to go rogue now?”, Beth’s voice was barely above a whisper, and sounded almost childlike. Tears were welling up in her large almond-shaped eyes.

Claudia blinked in surprise, and then her expression softened. “No…. of course not, dear.”, she replied gently, “That will never happen. Josef raised you right. He proved to be an excellent Foster-Sire after all.”, she paused, smiling softly, “I know to what you refer, and I can assure you that this……lapse….. was brought on by your head injury…….. and the desperate need for food to heal your wounds.” The Cleaner cocked her head and smiled warmly up into Beth’s lupine face, “I’ll bet you don’t even remember it, do you?”

Beth gave her angular head a barely perceptible shake, her pleading sapphire eyes riveted on Claudia’s face. “Nothing….. nothing after the woman shot me in the hallway…… not until I came to……..then I……I saw……….” Her voice broke and trailed off. She squeezed her eyes shut, and large shimmering tears rolled down her long muzzle, splashing to the floor.

“Just as I thought.”, Claudia replied with a nod. Having already returned her black leather glove to her right hand, she reached up and began to gently scratch the hide under Beth’s left ear. In spite of her distress, the she-wolf tipped her head to the left, leaning into the comforting touch.

“It’s alright, dear.”, the Cleaner murmured softly, “Don’t cry. You can’t blame yourself for losing control here. You were fighting for your life…… for all our lives really……and you undoubtedly lost all self-control, and reason, when they shot you in the head. Serves the bastards right. Remember…..They started this fight. You just finished it. Don’t give it a second thought, Beth.”

Then, extending her left hand as well, Claudia grasped a handful of blood-soaked ruff on either side of Beth’s neck. She leaned back, pulling, “Come on now…..up you get…..on your feet.”

Beth rose off her haunches slowly, and stood on all fours. Claudia then pulled forward again, still using a hank of dirty ruff as a means of leading the huge she-wolf. Beth followed obediently. “There’s a good girl!”, The Lead Cleaner said softly, smiling with uncharacteristic warmth. “Come this way…..we’ll get you washed up. You’ll be as good as new.”

As they passed Phelan, Beth seemed to notice him for the first time. She stopped abruptly and shot him a desperate look. “Phelan! Mick and Josef…….?”

“Easy, dearheart……easy.”, the big Irish werewolf replied in gentle tones, “They’re both fine….. thanks to you, I might add. They were still sleeping it off when I left to look for you. Now, go with the pretty ladies and let them wash you up. Then I’ll take you home…..home to see Mick……okay?”

Beth nodded and, slipping back into a dazed, dull, expression, allowed Claudia to tow her forward across the ruined office. The two other Cleaners were watching from near the hallway entrance. Their eyes widened simultaneously when they realized Claudia was bringing Beth to them.

The Lead Cleaner stopped in front of her horrified subordinates. She nodded towards the huge golden werewolf standing beside her. “Find a hose bib outside, run a hose, and wash her up inside the garage. We can’t send her home looking like this…..”

“Wash her with what!?”, one wide-eyed assistant managed, “We don’t carry pet shampoo, for pete’s sake!”

An expression of dangerous irritation flickered across Claudia’s aristocratic features. “What DO we have?”

“We have some carpet shampoo….”, the other assistant began, swallowing hard.

“That will be just fine.” Claudia replied, ending further discussion, “Werewolves are made of tough stuff. See to her.” She gave Beth a gentle push towards her two assistants. The bedraggled she-wolf stepped forward, her head, once again, hanging low, her normally bright sapphire eyes dull and distant.

The Lead Cleaner’s two assistants exchanged nervous glances. Then, slowly, one of them reached out and took hold of Beth’s ruff. That golden mane, normally so silky and flowing, hung in filthy, blood-soaked, mats around Beth’s powerful neck. Beth offered no response to the assistant’s grip.

Emboldened by the she-wolf’s lack of response, the assistant Cleaner pulled…….and to her amazement, the golden werewolf followed…..like a dog on a lease.

Exchanging glances, and smiling nervously, the two subordinate Cleaners led Beth down the hallway towards the garage……where a much needed bath awaited.

Satisfied that one situation was well in hand, Claudia turned again to face the carnage that filled the communal office area. Her eyes drifted across the overturned desks and shattered computers. Her gaze lingered, for a moment, on four large words……… scrawled in blood in huge block letters across the wall Beth had been sitting in front of when they found her. The words read simply, LEAVE MY FRIENDS ALONE! A grim smile flitted across the Cleaner’s face, before her attention drifted to the floor all around her.

Phelan stood watching Claudia as the vampress sauntered forward. He watched as she squatted down and carefully picked a small object out of the debris on the floor. The vampress examined what appeared to be a little lump of metal, allowing it to rest on the flat of her gloved palm, while she peered at it as though it were a diamond…..an expression of dawning wonder on her refined features.

Phelan stepped quietly towards her, and dipped his shaggy head so that he too could peer at what had so captured the Lead Cleaner’s attention. The red wolf sniffed at it, and then snarled softly, taking a step back. “That’s silver!”, he growled.

Claudia didn’t answer…… She continued to stare at the mushroomed, spent hollow-point round that rested in her hand, transfixed by it. Phelan was right…..it was silver……she could smell it too. It was silver with a thin veneer of lead covering it in places..…… and it had hit its target…..Beth. Its mushroomed shaped attested to that……. But…..how????? How had the werewolf survived being shot with silver bullets?

The Lead Cleaner’s dark eyes widened as her reality tilted, and the obvious answer suddenly sprang into her mind……………….

So…… This is what the AO-Negative blood type does in a werewolf……….

Even though it was deserved, I don't think Beth is going to have an easy time living with herself after tasting human flesh... :gasp:

I agree that Beth will have a hard time with this side of her nature. Just as Mick has a hard time with himself.

When Claudia realized that the round in her hand was silver, coated with lead as a distraction as to its lethalness to vampires, and understood that Beth survived because of her blood type, it occurred to me--did she pass on that to Josef and Mick when she fed them?

Wait, Josef is a 'noble' and he isn't immune to silver, but he is a vampire.

Love this!!!

Thanks!

Jenna

HI Jen!
Yes....Beth is immune to silver's lethal effects on Werewolves because of the "Noble" AO-Neg bloodtype. That's the advantage the "Noble" line imparts to Werewolves.
And no.....she could not pass that protection on to Josef and Mick when she fed them. It's a genetic quirk....not passed in the blood, but in the genes.
And, you're right, Josef is already a "Noble".....but in Vampires, the AO-Neg Bloodtype imparts a strong resistance to fire. Most vamps turn to ash went exposed to fire, but "Noble" Vamps, like Josef, Coraline, and Lance have resistance to it.....they are burned, but if they can escape the flames....they will survive and heal quickly. However, an AO-Neg Vamp has no resistance to silver, the way a "Noble" Werewolf, like Beth, does.

And dear Cat and Ailith! :ghug: :rose: :flowers:  Yup....I'm still here.....struggling thru a muse-dry-spell, but she's beginning to stir in me again. I catch myself daydreaming about different story angles as I go about my day. :hyper: I already have about 3000 words of Chap 28 written. It's a toughy, even with an active muse, it would be difficult. Beth has soooo much "baggage" to cope with now. She's going to be hating herself.....and not knowing what to do with those toxic feelings. Then, Josef and Mick are both going to be waking up at the mansion for the first time following their near-death experiences.....and their first thoughts are going to be WTF!!!???? :rolling:

Anyway.....It's going to be an important Chapter, and I don't want to screw it up. :tomato:
With my muse stirring again, :fingerscrossed: :quill: I will be working on it.
Thank you for always being so patient and supportive of my efforts! :notworthy:

Lions,

I just read this wonderful chapter again and, as always happens when I read a really good story, I get something new in the reread.

Claudia is quite wonderful here. She knows what Beth did and how it will effect her, and is comforting and reassuring. Claudia does not have an abundance of warmth in her nature, but she does know that from time to time, it is called for and she knows how to dispense it when needed.

I think the Cleaners will be adding a pet shampoo to their cleaning supplies. Beth is part of their world now.

Just lovely.

I hope your muse is doing well and growing more talkative..

Good must, nice muse. Pat pat pat.

Now, I am going to have to start over at the first chapter and reread this entire wonderful story!!!

Thanks for your wonderful, wonderful visition, Lions

Jenna

Thank you, OneBit! :notworthy: I'm so close to finishing Chap 28 right now.....it's very frustrating. :quill: My muse keeps digging in her heels, and I must struggle to get to where I want to take the story. Dog-on stubborn muses! :grumble: They can be such a pain.....but then, when they snap out of it, and decide to cooperate again.....the story begins to flow like a river....effortless.....it's great! :type: But, I never know from one day to the next what kind of mood my muse is going to be in. Just between you and me.....my muse is hotflashing and grouchy these days. Thanks for sending good vibes to my muse.....hopefully this will sooth her & inspire her to help me write the rest of this story.
Thanks again for your support and patience. Chap 28 only lacks a few more paragraphs to be finished.....but I know the exact "line" I want it to end on, and I'm struggling to get there. I feel like a runner who can see the finish line, but can't figure out how to reach it. :quill: :noway: And reaching the conclusion of Chap 28 properly is very important, because it is the necessary 'set up' for big conversations that unfold in Chap 29.
Sigh.....so frustrating. :sigh:
My deep thanks to all of you who hang in there with me, you keep encouraging me, pulling for me, :comfort2: no matter how long a 'dry spell' lasts. The Moonlight Community is truely a special place, filled with wonderful people! :clapping:
My gratitude to you all! :notworthy: :rose:
