This is really beautiful, blue - filled with quiet moments that speak volumes. It's those small moments that make up a life - and you show us Lilah's life, struggle, regret, love, sorrow and joy in such a beautiful and subtle way:
bluedahlia3 wrote:We sit here pretending the years have been kind to us, and for a moment everything else pales. Ray and I are together, and that’s all that matters. If I look at the porch deck I’ll see the canes that allow Ray to move slowly from one room to another. But for tonight, just for these minutes, I won’t look down. I know this time will end soon enough and he’ll go to bed. I’ll stay up to listen to the radio for a while and be alone with my thoughts.
That really is stunning.

Wonderful.

It is nice to have Lilah's point of view in the story.. All those little pieces, those moments of wonder of a life so messed up by fate and choise..Sad though, she will never know the truth about her baby's dad. It might ease her shame and sorrow...or , maybe she is happy to believe that she has something of Mick?? Very sensitive writing, bluedahlia3

Saw this pop back to the top of Active Topics and had to reread it again.

I love the mood of this piece--so introspective. They were all so wounded. Mick left so that Ray and Lilah could be together, but no one was together here. All of them were locked into very solitary, separate existences.

Ray with his war memories that haunted his nights and days.

Lilah with her memories of what once was and was no more.

And Mick, with his memories of what he loved and thought he had no right to.

Wonderfully done!

Thank you!

Jenna

After re-reading Wisteria I couldn't help but come back here to re-read this story as well. The story seemed even deeper and sadder to me this time around. So much sorrow for both Lilah and Mick, and surely especially for Lilah .. . and all due to events completely out of their control. Lilah obviously has a difficult life with injured Ray, but she just as obviously loves him and is committed to him. Yet there is that haunting question about how it is possible to be passionately in love with two different men . . .

From the show it seemed that Mick didn't keep track of Lilah, since he didn't know she'd had a child. Reading this today makes me wonder if she kept track of him, and if she had to mourn again when he disappeared in 1952.

Back to reread this gem as well, after rereading Wisteria. I love Lilah's POV. :rose:

These stories inspired me to write a couple of Lilah stories, too. I'm so grateful to bluedahlia3 for writing these evocative and inspiring stories.

How lovely to see the "Lilah stories" popping up again! I'd just been thinking of these stories, and longing for a bit of time to re-read them. And now I've got a bit of time, at last.

It's been a long time since the last time I read this, but I remember some parts almost word for word. Such an evocative story. It's such a treat getting to see this whole situation from Lilah's viewpoint, to see her thoughts and wishes and little moments of despair. I love the small flashbacks interspersed throughout. They're so powerful.

Every time I read this I wonder a little more about why Mick never kept up with Lilah or checked up on her. And I wonder if she ever tried to find out what had happened to him.
