As Josef sits at his desk reading over a possible new investment, he gets a whiff of a scent he thought he would never smell again and looks up to see the source of said scent being escorted into his office.
Josef closes the manila folder in his hands and takes in a deep breath, getting the full realm of scents surrounding his visitor, when one scent registers in his mind, and another specific scent doesn’t, his eyes snap open.
“Coraline, I must say this is unexpected,” Josef says calmly folding his hands together on the desk in front of him.
“Believe me I am not here by choice” Coraline says before taking a seat opposite Josef.
“Then why are you here?” Josef asks, his face not betraying the anger boiling beneath the surface.
“I need to see Mick” Coraline starts but Josef cuts her off.
“Not going to happen, anything else?” he says calmly, smiling to himself at the irritation clearly present over Coraline’s face.
“You don’t understand, I need to tell him about the cure, about what to expect when it wears off” Coraline spoke softly, if Josef hadn’t known better he would have thought she was being genuine.
“Well if that is all then your visit here is wasted, Mick does not need to know anything more about the cure, it is irrelevant” Josef replies, a smirk nearly breaking over the mask of calm sitting over his face.
“How could it be irrelevant?” Coraline asks, confused.
“He is no longer human, therefore it is irrelevant” Josef states, finally letting a smile break over his pleased face at Coraline’s reaction to this news.
“When, how? He shouldn’t have reverted back for another few months” Coraline ponders more to herself then her counterpart.
“He didn’t revert back, he was turned back, by choice I might add” Josef says proudly, beginning to thoroughly enjoy the obvious discomfort his news was having on the ex wife of his best friend.
“He chose to be turned back?” coraline asks shocked, clearly not believing it.
“Yes” is all Josef says in reply.
“Why?” Coraline asks her face failing to hide the hurt she was feeling.
“Because he realised that humans are weak, and that as a human he could not do what was necessary at the time to save the woman he loves” Josef replies smirking, the added emphasis on the words “weak” and “loves” not lost on his visitor.
“Who?” Coraline asked, already knowing the answer but not wanting to admit it to herself.
“Oh coraline, you and I both know who, you handpicked her for him after all” Josef spoke, choosing his words to have the most painful impact possible.
“Who turned him?” coraline asks, ignoring the whole topic of Beth Turner, but not being able to conceal the pain Josef’s last confession had caused her.
Had Josef not had to deal with the aftermath of Coraline’s torture on Mick, he may have felt slightly sorry for the broken woman before him, but alas he was the one to put the shattered pieces of Mick back together over the years, so he felt absolutely no remorse as he spitefully replied to her question.
“I did, I am now his sire, so there is absolutely no reason for you to ever see him again”
“Who are you to say if I can see him or not, I love him, and I know he still loves me, I don’t care what you say about Beth, he married me, he chose me” Coraline began but was once more interrupted by Josef.
“And you killed him” he added with a smirk.
“And then I saved him” Coraline added challenging Josef.
“And then he chose to go back to being a vampire, something which you and I both know he despised, to save Beth, now what were you saying about who he loves?” Josef spoke mercilessly.
“I still possess the cure, I can save him again, Beth can’t” Coraline spoke with a smile on her face, that was soon wiped off by Josef’s words.
“If you gave him the cure it wouldn’t be you he would spend his mortal few months with” Josef’s eyes bore straight into Coraline, enjoying the torment he was placing upon her.
“And Beth has already saved him, from himself, something you could never do, he is now quite happy being what he is, so happy in fact that he had agreed to turn Beth” Josef added, gleefully watching Coraline’s expression flutter between rage and pain.
“You lie” Coraline spat out.
“No” was all Josef needed to say, and Coraline knew it was the truth.
“Speaking of the cure, I’m surprised you would have taken it again, I don’t see the point, unless you still thought that Mick only loved Beth because she was mortal” Josef says before leaning back in his chair for the first time since his unwelcome guest had entered his office.
“Punishment” was all Coraline answered.
Josef snickered, “so you are being made human as punishment, Mick is happy being a vampire, Beth will soon be a vampire, and I get to sit back and watch the pieces of this very messy love triangle finally fall into their appropriate places, now that is what I call irony.”
Coraline sat in silence for a moment, and Josef could feel the pain flowing from her body, but he felt no sympathy for her what so ever, he smiled and watched as she opened and closed her mouth with the intention of words, but none came.
After a moment she did speak though, “will you at least tell Mick I came?” she asked, almost pleaded with Josef.
“If I did, it wouldn’t have the effect you are hoping for, he wouldn’t suddenly be drawn back into his self loathing and unexplainable self destructive fascination with you, he would simply brush it off without a second thought. You have no pull over him anymore Coraline,” Josef spoke as calmly as if he was relaying the weather report.
“Then there is no harm in telling him,” Coraline countered.
“No harm, no, but I won’t give you the satisfaction, you don’t deserve it. Now if that is all I never want to see you in my city again, if I even get a whisper of your name I shall personally hunt your human form down and kill you myself, understood?” Josef said standing up and straightening his jacket.
“Goodbye Josef” was all Coraline said as she finally accepted defeat and left the eccentric office with her head hung low.
Josef ran a hand through his hair before smiling, he really had enjoyed that, and he knew that he would never hear of or see Coraline again. Looking at his watch Josef grinned, it was lunchtime, he felt his fangs extend as he picked up the phone and ordered himself some lunch, Jessica, one of his favourite brunettes.
