Shadows of the Past

The past is our definition. We may strive, with good reason, to escape it, or to escape what is bad in it, but we will escape it only by adding something better to it. ~Wendell Berry

Mick stared at the mysterious young woman sitting across from him. She had introduced herself as Lauren Price, but had yet to explain her situation. She was a small, timid, pretty girl in her early twenties, and was one of the most curious people Mick had ever met. She had long, dark hair, and a pale complexion. However, what interested Mick most was the expression on her face. It was somber and grave. Yet, it also displayed what seemed an unearthly knowing. It was as if she were privy to something others were not. This strange young woman fascinated Mick in a way he couldn’t explain. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he had met her somewhere before.

“So, Miss Price, what is it I can do for you?” Mick decided to instigate the conversation.

“Well…I’m looking for someone, and I was hoping you could help me find him,” she looked oddly uncomfortable in revealing this information.

“I can try, but, regretfully, I can’t promise you anything,” Mick reponded.

“I’m aware of this, Mr. St. John,” came her quiet reply.

“I am going to need some information…everything you know,” Mick informed her.

“Of course,” she replied, “His name, I believe, is Michael Barrett.”

“You believe?” Mick asked.

“Well, you see, Mr. St. John, I’ve only met him once…when I was three. He’s…my father, and my mother is…she’s…well let’s just say, she’s not very open and sharing when it comes to him. All I know about him is that he was a doctor at the Memorial Hospital eighteen years ago. That’s all I ever got out of her…. So…can you help me?” Mick found the pleading urgency in her voice to be truly moving.

“I will do my very best, Miss Price,” Mick’s tone reflected his sincerity.

“Thank you, Mr. St. John. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this,”she replied, “This is so important to me. I’ve dreamt of his being part of my life for so long, and you see, I’m getting married in a few weeks. It would mean the world to me for him to be there.”

“Well I’ll see what I can do,” both Mick and the young woman stood, and Mick led her to his office door. She turned before leaving and handed Mick a piece of paper with her phone number on it.

“Let me know if you find out anything,” she said more brightly.

“Of course, Miss Price,” Mick replied.

“Lauren, please, Mr. St. John,” she insisted.

“Well, then, Lauren, it’s Mick,” he teased. She laughed sincerely at his reply. It was the first time Mick had seen her smile, and he could’t help noticing its unexplainable familiarity.

Hmmmmm. Intriguing. What does Lauren have that has Mick all intrigued. Maybe her father has a dark secret too and doesn't want to be found. Can't wait to see where this is heading.
