wpgrace wrote:Thanks for that Carol... complicated. So the actors may be getting very little for the SciFi showings.
How about for the DVD's?
Which is, I guess, one of the issues the actors are/were threatening to strike over... they still threatening?
I haven't paid much attention to the actors strike threat to be honest. My company is in the reality show business now so we don't have to worry about it on the same level.
DVD are another kettle of fish and I don't think they make much at all on them. Truth be told all expenses of the producer must be recouped first which is right because they are the ones that fronted the money. Then there is a distributor's fee. If a company which is different from the producer originally distributed the show they may be entitled to a fee for a certain number of years if the show is released in dvd, internet etc. That fee can be anywhere from 10-35%. Then the actual company that is distributing the dvd is entitled to a distribution fee. After you take all that money away very little is left even on successful dvds. Also, don't forget there may be music licensing fees. By the time you get to actors and writers you may have next to nothing left.
That may not seem fair. But the best writers and actors will not be seen on television without a producer and either a distributor or a network picking them up and paying for the show and then actually putting it on the air.
Let's see to put this at all on topic. hmmm. Watch Moonlight on Sci Fi tonight.

Yeah, cause it's Fever tonite!!!
But your tutorial was interesting and certainly satisfies our curiosity... Cause I think many of us were wondering how that all works. So thank you very very much.
And I love our actors, but I totally get that the ones who put out the money have to make it back with profit before the actors get something... and on successful shows and DVD's it may seem the profits become obscene, but the risk was taken before the success was assured, so I get that too. Actors sell their bods and writers sell their words... they don't put up a stake unless they work also as producers.
Hoping at least the little bit of exposure the SciFi reruns are getting for the actors help... tho with under 2 million viewers, I wonder if it really does much more than gratify us.

Sci-Fi isn't CBS, so yes, the exposure is limited. But to put things in perspective, the show that follows it (Battlestar Galatica) is Sci-fi's flagship show. It's numbers are under two million as well. So for a series such as Moonlight with only reruns, to be pulling in the number it is is actually pretty good. I've actually gotten a couple of guys, yes guys, in my office to watch Moonlight. One thinks it's pretty cool, the other was less impressed, but is willing to give it a couple more tries. It will be interesting to see what they think of Fever (they'll probably both like the helicopter launching missile scene more than anything else)

Good point Dark.. I hadn't realized the BG follow up wasn't doing better than that. Of course, maybe that's part of the whole Friday night thing?
And yeah, boys will be boys... maybe they will like Alex more as the serial killer...

Thanks cassy for the residual info. That stuff just fascinates me. I always have been intrigued by Hollywood and it's operations. Moonlightaholics: where education and smut collide!
I am more interested in seeing the numbers after next week's airing. Fever will get good numbers--of that I have no doubt. And with it being a fave of most ML fans, I expect to see bigger numbers. But, for the new fans who have not seen the show, after viewing Fever tonite, I predict larger numbers next week.
Fever is definitely the hook.

In my excitement to post my words of wisdom, I blew past everything--go figure!
