maggatha - the easiest way to explain it is that the more a person is searched on IMDb, the higher his rank will be. If there's "buzz" about an actor whether it be good (in regards to an upcoming project) or bad (as a result of some sort of public embarrassment or even the passing of an actor), then that usually translates into folks searching for info about the actor online. IMDb is one of the resources that might be hit in those searches.
The number itself is only one indication of where an individual stands in terms of popularity in the public eye. We're just tracking it for fun.
