Re Carol Barbee (she was being discussed on the Donate Life thread but it's more appropriate here), I found this old article (from April) about the CW's pilot development:
http://www.blogomatic3000.com/2010/04/0 ... 11-pilots/
The relevant section:
Betwixt (Drama)
Executive Producer: Elizabeth Chandler, Paul Stupin, Carol Barbee
Cast Includes: Allison Miller
Synopsis: Revolves around “changelings” in an urban setting who are responsible for saving humans from evil; based on novel of the same name.
It was also mentioned at THR and Deadline Hollywood, but then... it was reported 18th May as dead:

So she's currently betwixt projects???
I think she has some sort of development deal with CBS, right? So she'll get another chance, I suppose.

Not a spoiler, since it's mentioned above, but...hearing Alex say "stab wound" gave me an instant flashback to NSTAV.

All roads and all...
I loved this ep. Not quite so complicated with the overflow of story lines... and some of the older story arcs make a reappearance. If only they could have done this sort of ep from the beginning, it might have done better...
Tho hard to tell now. Anyway, Alex was heartbreaking, cos Andy had a lot of stuff to deal with in this one... really well done.

ITA Grace, it felt like the show finally found its groove. I liked the story lines.

I enjoyed this episode much more than last week's. Given we accept Andy and Lisa's abrupt encounter last week, things made sense. We had more dramatic side issues which have exactly two episodes to resolve.
Still, the kid at the rave who couldn't breath could have been dropped in favor of character development. You know, it feels like that and last week's poisoning are striving to imitate House in figuring out the mystery disease. (she says as an episode of House is on TV)
Hey, what happened to Alfre Woodard? I get why she wasn't in the revamped pilot Win Loss but where has she been in the last two? Apparently they aren't going to resolve Miranda and her (gee, I don't even remember her character's name) conflict over Miranda's father. This reinforces my mantra that there are too many characters if we didn't miss her.

OK, I may be in the minority here, but I had mixed reactions to this ep....the flow and pace were good and the storylines more focussed.
Andy's character was front and center in this one, and grace is right, he had a lot going on. His career means everything to him and Uncle Mike is threatening to destroy it and Andy in the process. The cutest part was in the beginning, when he admits how distracted Lisa has made him. The saddest was at the end when Rena shows up as he and Lisa are heading out for a drink, and you can see how torn he is between Rena and Lisa. But the biggest twist of the knife is when Rena tells him his 'date' is waiting. She knows, and she's ok with it because she's accepted she and Andy don't have a future together. When she says it, Andy finally realizes there's no going back and it's breaking his heart.
There were two points in the ep where I experienced ML deju vu....when Andy was arguing with Rena, asking her if she thought he would lie for Uncle Mike. Maybe it was just me, but Andy disappeared and Mick emerged. The other was when they fast-forwarded through the night-time Pittsburgh skyline. All I could think of was LA and I half expected to see Mick walking off the elevator into the FOS.
The story line with the firefighters was ok, but trite. Lone female firefighter among a cadre that won't accept her, making her life hell. Adding the rape aspect just piled it on. It would have been different if the female firefighter stuck to her original position and let the captain 'go to hell', for everything he put her through. But they followed the altruistic and predictable outcome that the female firefighter and her tormentor end up being the living donors. Holding hands as they get ready for surgery was just too much.
The other story line with David and Miranda was different. They all jumped to the conclusion the kid had done drugs and waited until it was almost too late before they backed away and looked for other causes to his problems. I would have loved to see how David and Miranda developed over the course of the show.
I believe this ep was shot after the show was canceled. It seemed the intensity was gone, but not for want of trying on the part of the actors.

I know what you mean about the skyline shots. I've noticed a couple other shows seem to use this technique for their seques and I think one of them predated ML.

I don't think she was doing it to save the capitan, but to save the only person there who was supportive of her, the injured firefighter who wanted to donate. It felt like those two were pretty close and maybe emotionally she couldn't afford to lose him.
As for the hand holding, with the other donor who had been such a jerk to her, that seemed like a stress reaction. He was a jerk (apparently not a total jerk, though; after all he was donating a lobe of his lung to save the capitan), but they were both facing the same daunting proposition.
