Is The Shield one of those shows you have to start watching from the beginning, or would I be okay just watching the season Alex was in?

You for sure would want to watch Season 5, so you know how Hiatt ends up with the Strike Team...but I don't think you'd need to go back to Season 1. I would recommend it, just because it's a damn good show.
