“Just get on with it.”
“Yeesh! You are a testy bunch tonight. How’s domesticity treating you, Mick?’
“It’s not. Beth’s at a conference in Fresno. I was alone for decades but now that Beth and I are together, I’m lost without her.”
“Awww. That’s so cuuute.”
“Shut up, Vic. Your love life is nothing to brag about.”
“At least I’m not shacked up with a human-”
“I was just talking to Slappy the other day, and-”
“He's not coming back, is he?”
“Who are you guys talking about?”
“Slapidon Komitova. 300 year old vamp from Eastern Europe. All right, laugh. One day you’ll grow up.”
“Come on. Don’t tell us that if your name was 'Slapiton Combitover’ you wouldn’t change it. Fast!”
“Probably, but I’m not him. He’s proud of his family name.”
“It’s not the only reason. When he left years ago, you said he’d been a low level government official with a gigantic ego: a small man then and a small man with fangs, now.”
“Yeah, well. The universe definitely has a sense of humor. Like Mishal Meausse was saying-”
“Micky Mouse??”
"All right, yuk it up but individuals sitting here have names that translate in various languages as smelly rotting vegetables, camel dung and a sexual act that turns even my stomach. Everything translates into something else. Learn other languages. Start with Greek and Latin. They’re foundational.”
“What does ‘Josef Kostan’ mean?”
“Means I win again.”

Gee, why am I not surprised? It is oh so Josef to distract his competition, and then win the game. Or did he cheat while they were all laughing about poor Slappy's name?
Thanks, Jen.
Thanks, Jen.

This one was just fun. Of course, Josef would rig the odds in his favor. But the utterly juvenile humor and rapport just appealed to me here.
Glad you enjoyed!

This one was just fun. Josef setting up the rules in his favor, the guys being so very high school in their humor, and those names. Just sounded like a discussion that would come up.darkstarrising wrote:This is very clever, Jenna - and clever of Josef as well.....loved the last line.

I saw this play out in my mind but it was a couple of hundred words longer.
Learning experience. Brevity and clarity...brevity and clarity...brevity...

Hilarious! Boys will be boys, whatever age they are. I can so see them hanging out together and Josef distracting them with wild tales of strange names.
Learning other languages will just make you find even more hilarious names. Like Johnny Depp. Means "idiot" in German.

You got it exactly!
First, Josef states that he makes the rules (Advantage Kostan #1)
Distractions #2 (Mick). #3 (silly names), and #4 (the importance of learning other languages)
and you have game, set and match. Kostan wins again!
Thanks for reading and reviewing! (and love the Johnny Depp thing. You wonder sometimes if things like that are an accident or deliberate... )

Well, technically Slapiton Komitova but to those guys it was Slap-it-on Comb-it-Over!
I'd certainly change it!
Hookrf on Phonics apparently worked for vampires, too. Thanks for reading and commenting!
