Of course Ryder would know from long experience, never,ever cross swords with the boss. Lucky, the hint of infatuation made this just delicious. And, Coraline would certainly pick New Orleans as a refuge during and after the war. After-all, anyone with real French roots knew where to live,

the rest of that story runs as deep as the vines themselves. Lucky, please don't leave that story untold,

At last I have time to add my congratulations to you for the superb work you did the for 'One Hundred Grand' challenge. I loved the way you gave us glimpses into Joseph's past. You could almost make this a full time job - giving us little insights into Joseph's journey through time. We adore him, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind. Thankyou for keeping your readers SO entertained.

Lucky, I loved the whole story - as always - but particularly the riverboat "scene".

Coraline smiled in triumph, and pressed closer against him. “That’s so very sweet of you, Alexander. You are going to allow me to thank you, aren’t you?”

He felt his arm going around her almost involuntarily, but there was steel in his eyes as he smiled back. “Not this time, sweetheart,” he said, “but I’ll be in touch.”

You know, Phee, I've written almost no Coraline...offhand, I can only think of one story of mine where she's appeared, and that was a short challenge fic. Here, I wanted to show her as manipulative NOT evil...because I think that's one of the main ways she has learned to deal with men, given the relative status of women in society for most of her long life. She's cajoling Josef, and he knows it...and he's willing to give up a medium-sized fortune to her. Which begs a few questions, doesn't it?

Well, *cough, cough...* it does seem obvious from what little is said about the two of them that in some way they do go back...and I've always wanted to do a first meeting story about those two.

Someday, someday...(cause I often have so much problems finding suitable subject material!)

That was amazing!! Each individual story had depth and such superb detail--each chapter a piece of a larger whole. I'll bet we all wanted to see more of each individual chapter. You have a wonderful talent for setting a moodn by describing the sights, sounds, touch of things.

I loved this, Lucky - or should I say, these? A beautiful series of vignettes, but with a singular thread running through them. As evocative and beautifully drawn as always.

What an interesting trip through Josef's past, and all tied to the common thread of wealth. Very nicely done!

For some reason, this line was among one of the most touching for me:

Inez stopped and looked at him, stunned. “When Carlos was alive, he would have scorned such an offer,” she said slowly. “But the world moves on and times change. You know you could buy Las Perditas outright, for that amount?”

"I could,” he said, “but where would be the point in taking the land without its heart? Las Perditas would be lost, indeed, without you.”

That was a beautiful line, Lucky.

... And Coraline...if anyone could out-Scarlett Scarlett, I think it would be her.

I kind of had the Scarlett image in my head, too. The only dialogue missing was "fiddle-dee-dee"!

It does! I was always intrigued by the comment Josef made to Mick in The Ringer when he said he'd known Coraline 100 years before Mick did. How well, one may wonder....?
