1982 Part 3 Anne's Birthday Trip to New York PG 13

Charles and Sarah took Anne to LAX.

"Mother, Hope is going to pick you up at the airport. Sarah said.

"Anne call us as soon as you get to the hotel.

Anne looked at her daughter and son-in-law indulgently. "Yes, Mom and Dad. I’ll check in every day and I promise not to drink or go off with strange men. But can I please stay out after midnight?"

"Only if Hope is watching you. Charles said.

Anne stamped her foot and did her best Sarah impression "Dad! That’s not fair!

Charles couldn't help but smile. "I never told you life was fair Princess."

"Mother, just be careful.

"Sarah I taught you how to be careful.

Look how that turned out! Sarah exclaimed.

You’re happily married to the love of your life, a handsome successful man. The two of you need to Chill Out."

"Chill Out? I know I didn’t teach you that expression. Charles said.

"Donors. Anne said smugly.

"All right. We trust your judgment just come home to us in one piece. Charles said

"And soon Mother.

Anne kissed Sarah and Charles. "I’ll be fine, you have to let me out of the nest sometime.



Five hours later.



Hope was standing at the gate, eyes on full alert for her human charge.

Hope saw her as soon as she got off the plane. There was a crowd of people in her way.

"Excuse me! Hope said. She started making her way through the crowd like a cat. " Excuse me. Finally one very annoying man stood between her and Anne and refused to move.

"EXCUSE ME! Hope said loudly.

"Wait your turn cutie-pie.


"Cutie-pie? Hope let out a growl and he turned around looking for drug dogs. Hope pushed past him and got to Anne.

"Anne how are you?

"I’m fine. She whispered in Hope’s ear. "I heard a vampire growl.

"That was me.

"Are you hungry?

No. Annoyed but not anymore." Hope glared at the man as they made their way down to baggage claim.

"So tell me Anne. Who am I?" Hope asked

"You’re my husband’s niece Hope Whitley Scanlon. I live with you in California and you didn’t want me to make the trip alone."

"Hey Aunt Anne how come I’m not your niece?

"These are old friends they know I was an only child.

"I like how you used my name. Am I married?

"Divorced.

"Scandalous! Hope lauged

"We have to be modern. Anne said seriously.


"Okay, how short a leash do Sarah and Charles have you on?

"If I’m with you I can do whatever I want.

"So I’m going to follow at a discreet distance. Have fun with your friends and they won’t know I’m around until Atlantic City. What do you want to do first?

"First we have to go to the hotel and call the warden. Anne said

"After that?

"I would like to take a little nap and then call the girls.

You got it.

They arrived at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and checked into their luxury suite.

Hope apologized "Anne I’m sorry Charles wouldn’t let me stay in the room next door. He insisted I be in your suite.

"This does not surprise me. Anne said. Let me call Sarah.

The phone was snatched up on the first ring.

"Mother! What took you so long?

"Don’t take that tone with me young lady.

"I’m sorry. I was worried.

"Hope was right there. I’m in suite 714 and I’m going to take a nap and then see my friends for dinner.

"All right. Put Hope on. Sarah ordered

No.

"What do you mean no? Sarah said.

"I mean no. If you want to give Hope jailer instructions call her yourself but if I pick up the phone I’m not handing it off.

"Mother!

"Good bye Sarah!

You told her! Hope lauged

"She’ll call back.

"She loves you.

"I know but I’m not a child. Let’s see how fast she calls.

Anne orders room service and waits.

Ten minutes later.

Ring!

Anne picks up the phone. "Sarah Anne Whitley, if this is nonsense I’ll deal with you when I get home.

"Anne its Charles.

"Charles are you calling with nonsense?

"No ma’am I would just like to speak to Hope for a minute. You can stay on the extension.

Anne conceded "All right.

"Hope, is the suite satisfactory? he asked

"Yes, Charles. My freezer temperature is perfect and Anne seems pleased.

"Take good care of her.

I will.

"Was that too invasive Anne? Charles asked lightly

"No Charles.

Good. Then enjoy your trip.



Later that evening at the restaurant.


Anne is surrounded by three of her oldest friends.

"Anne you look wonderful.

"California agrees with you.

"Do you miss New York?

"I miss you. I miss not being able to walk to the store or hail a taxi. But my girl takes excellent care of me.

"You moved right after the blackout.

"Well, someone broke in. I didn’t feel safe anymore.

"I can understand that. Are we going to get to meet this niece of yours?

"Yes, when we go to Atlantic City on Saturday. But what are we going to do tomorrow?

"We’re taking you shopping and lunch at the Russian Tea Room.

Oh my! Anne exclaimed

"Then we’re going to the theater.

"The theater what are we going to see?

It’s a surprise.

Anne didn’t know what would happen if Hope couldn’t buy a last minute ticket.

Her friends put her in a taxi back to the hotel and Hope got her own cab to follow.

Her friends took her to the hottest play in town Dreamgirls. Hope managed to get a ticket through certain contacts. Anne was really having a wonderful time.

The next morning Hope arranged for them to take a helicopter ride to Atlantic City. None of the women had ever done anything so exciting. They were all charmed by Hope and felt much better about who their friend was living with. The ladies walked along the boardwalk and sat on the beach and then spent the night in the casino. Hope saw to it that Anne had a huge lemon cake for her birthday and the women had a wonderful time.

The next morning when they had to fly back to New York Anne was a little sad. She knew this would probably be the last time she saw her friends. She was going to ask Charles if she could have them visit in LA sometime but she didn’t think he’d approve.

She said goodbye to her friends and Hope whisked her off to the airport. She noticed Anne was quiet.

"You can come back and visit you know. Hope said.

"Maybe.

"No maybe. You tell Charles and Sarah you want to come.

"They worry so much.

"They do and they have reason but as long as I’m here it’s safe. I kept you safe before for them."

"I think that’s why they hate this city. Anne said

"I’d love to see you again. Hope said.

"I’d like to come back for a visit but I don’t know…..

"If Charles and Sarah give you any problems pull out that brush. You’ll scare both of them.

"Hope I think I’m a little too old. My brush is just for show.

"You don’t need strength with that brush. The silver does the work. Hope winked. They won’t be able to sit for hours without blood.

"Why Hope you sound like you know what it feels like. Anne said.

Hope laughed. "Cleaners have a very important job. We keep the humans from looking too closely. If you make even a small mistake there are consequences. In my first year I was forced to wear silver jewelry for five minutes. I never forgot anything on a job again."

"Does it really hurt that much? Anne asked concerned.

"No. Hope lied. She wasn’t going to be the one to tell Anne that a touch of silver felt like being burned with an iron. "It’s just very warm and it makes you feel quite uncomfortable. But don’t you worry about it, I’m sure that time you used it on Sarah it wasn’t any worse then a spanking she might have received as a girl.

"Thank goodness. Anne said. "I’d never forgive myself. Although Sarah is a little spoiled.

Hope laughed. " It’s not easy being 21. I’m glad I was older. The older you are when you’re turned the shorter your vampire childhood.

"Hope can I really come back and visit?

Anytime.

I'm glad Hope gave her a great time without intruding. The talk about the hair brush was equally hilarious and sad. Even Hope is holding back on her, somehow. I don't think I could stand being coddled like they do with her. But it's out of love so she puts up with it.

Oh what a WONDERFUL birthday celebration for Anne! And Hope did a great job of 'shadowing' her. And there were so many lines that had me cracking up!

francis - Charles and Sarah are overprotective of their human. They can't help themselves and Anne does accept it for the most part in the spirit it's given in. Love.


Aggie - I wanted Anne to have a wonderful time and Hope is an excellent guard vampire.

Since Anne and Charles weren't going to talk too much in this one I wanted it to be memorable with their airport talk.

Love this part!! Anne got to be with her friends and Hope is so helpful with giving Anne the freedom that she needs! Sarah and Charles should definately "chill out" a little bit!!! Love this story...
