"About time you showed up."

The voice startled her, jerking her attention to the living room. Seeing him sprawled out on her couch, a smile tugged at her mouth.

"Haven't you ever heard of knocking?"

"I did. You weren't home."

"So you let yourself in."

His smirk was her only answer. Obviously.

She continued with her usual routine, refusing to let him bother her. If she were to ask outright, she was certain he'd send her around in circles before coming to this point. Fairly certain anyway. It seemed to be his way of keeping himself entertained.

"I need a favor, Blondilocks."

She frowned. Mick was supposed to be busy today. Did he know something she didn't?

Or was there actually something he wanted from her?

"Insults will get you everywhere, Josef."

He shifted forward slightly, eyes catching hers and pinning her still.

"Not every human gets a nickname from me."

Beth fidgeted as the tension in the room grew.

"What is it that you want?"

Josef grinned predatorily.

Beth was starting to get a very, very bad feeling about this.

"Dinner would be nice."

She stepped back, confusion playing across her features.

"But…you…don't eat…."

"I don't live off water and sunshine, doll."

Silence stretched between them. She decided to try a different tact.

"Why?"

"Vampire 101. The sun is not the vampire's friend." He paused. "Besides, I don't look good in green."

Beth snorted. "No, why do you want me…."

"To join me for dinner?"

At her nod, he continued, "Can't I take care of my best friend's girl?"

She looked at him suspiciously.

"We aren't dating." Not yet.

"Exactly, and I'd hate for you to be alone on this…I hesitate to say holiday. But seeing as Mick is out chasing faithless lovers…"

Josef's gaze flicks to the calendar, followed shortly by Beth's.

She twitched, doing her best to stifle a laugh.

"Certainly," she said archly, giving her best British accent.

He raised an eyebrow, waiting for clarification.

"I'll be your bloody valentine, Joz'f. But you are explaining to Simone if she gets jealous."

He grinned wickedly.

"You have yourself a deal."

What did I just get myself into?

I love it!!!! SOOOOO adorably Josef! Leave it to him to... invite himself to dinner... so that he can keep Beth company when Mick is not able to be there!

Oh, no, no, no. I'm sorry, but that's entirely unacceptable as a one-shot. Sounds like a perfect chapter one to me!! More, please?? :snicker: :snicker:

So, what's Josef up to? Make Simone jealous? Make Mick jealous so he finally admits that he's in love? Or is he so enamored with Beth that he takes leftovers - time that Mick didn't fill - because he can't get the whole meal?
At first I thought he wanted to bite her, but it seems he just wants to spend dinner time with her. Josef always has an agenda. You will see, your muse will give you something more for a sequel. This screams sequel to me. :yahoo:

I'm afraid I have to concur with the others. I know Josef quite well, and he does nothing without an ulterior motive (at least one, many times more than one). I'd be very surprised if he let the story stop there. So I will just have to say: great beginning, I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the rest! ;)
