Cheers to Fate

When the universe sends you a sign, you have to answer the call…


The small group gathered together in Beth’s apartment to celebrate with the happy couple. It was a special day: their one year anniversary. Their closest friends were there to share it with them. Mellow jazz was playing softly in the background and champagne was uncorked and poured into glasses.

The telephone was off the hook, the cell phone turned off.

“I’d like to propose a toast!” Maureen called out, holding up her glass.

There were groans of protest from the couple, but they were overridden.

“All right, listen up,” Maureen continued. “To you both. Together a year now.”

“Cheers!” the couple said, hoping to be done with it, but knowing Maureen too well.

“Cheers,” everyone echoed.

“Wait a minute, I’m not through yet,” Maureen interrupted them. “To you, and to that moment you first met.”

“Okay, don’t even—“Beth tried to interrupt, only to be ignored.

“At a murder scene. Then at a funeral. Then later, you accidentally met again at the morgue – several times. You said, don’t you think it’s a little weird, us running into each other here? I call it fate. So, to…”

“To morgues,” Mick St. John toasted with a wry grin.

Maureen gave him a tolerant look. “To fate.”

“To fate,” everyone echoed.

“Now I know why you’d rather be at the morgue!” Maureen murmured to Beth, eyeing the tall, dark PI appreciatively.

Doing some appreciating of her own, Beth had no choice but to agree. She met Mick’s gaze over her glass. “To fate,” she whispered, for vampire ears only. And to the first time they met – when she was four.

“To fate,” he whispered back.

Following two completely different paths, we end up in the same place. Don’t you think that’s a little strange?
I’m here and so are you. There must be a reason...

Oh, great. And because I love Mo, I am so glad she isn't dead here, but joining the celebrations.
It must be odd for Mick to see how much Beth told her best friend. I remember the husband of my best friend being embarrassed when I put what I knew of his courtship into a poem at their wedding.

Wpgrace: I believe Francis mentioned once that she keeps a list of the fanfic she's read. That must be it because I can't imagine her memory being that good! I posted these on MLL and probably MLF too. What with all the constant change and all going on the last several months, I never got around to putting them up on ML4E.

I'd read this before and decided to journey down this particular memory lane one more time. Can I just tell you how glad I am to see that you decided to let Maureen be the one to offer the toast instead of Marissa?? I remember when you originally posted this elsewhere, you had written that you didn't realize you'd put the wrong name and I told you I thought Maureen was a better fit at this gathering because Maureen was a true friend, whereas Marissa was more of a "frenemy." That small fact just made re-reading this that much better. Thanks for reposting all these wonderful snippets in the lives of MickBeth!

Wow, I have obsessed fans? I'm flattered! Hmm... did I change the name to Marissa when you mentioned it? I have to be honest and admit I think I overlooked changing it on all my copies (I'm a bit dyslexic-like when it comes to names that sound alike esp. with the same 1st letter). But I left her there, because obviously Maureen wants to be there. I always listen to my characters.

Yes, much better than meeting in a parking lot.
And much better with the 2 of them together.

So wonderful scene of their common life...and yes, the meeting at the morgue is definitely better than that at the parking lot..Maybe I should give much more thought to my nightly whereabouts, right?

Oh, I LOVED this story! I must have read it long ago and far away, because I hadn't commented on it here... but I've always thought this was the way it should've gone.
