Bang! Bang! Bang!
Aquamarine rang down the stairs screaming. “Josef! Josef, it’s happening again.”
Josef was drinking from his head freshie Tangie. He carefully retracted his fangs. “What’s happening Doll?”
“That banging noise in my room. I think it’s a ghost.”
Josef glared at Tangie. I thought you were going to take care of that.”
Tangie shook her head. “Josef, this is not a new hazing technique. I have interrogated everyone.
“If I have to get involved in this no one is going to be happy.” Josef growled.
Aqua pouted. “I don’t want anyone to get into trouble. Josef, I don’t think it’s the girls, there’s a cold spot in my room too.
Josef sighed and motioned for Tangie to follow him as they went up the stairs he mumbled. “If Delancy turned the heat off in her room, I’m blaming you.”
“Josef, she didn’t do it. Tangie insisted. I gave her a chance to confess without losing her spot in rotation. She would have jumped at it.
Josef opened Aqua’s door. He went in to investigate.
“Tangie, there’s no cold spot, no noise, I think the girls are up to mischief.”
Tangie walked into the room, as soon as she was halfway to the bed the noise started again.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Tangie gasped. “What is that?”
“What?” Josef snapped.
“That sound.”
“I don’t hear anything.” Josef insisted.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! CRASH!
Tangie turned around and saw a vase smashed on the floor and knicknacks practically jumping off the bookcase.
She looked at Josef and whispered. “Is it an earthquake?’
“No.” He said seriously. “Get out.”
As Tangie tried to leave a piece of china levitated and cut her on the arm.
“OUCH!
Josef smelled the blood before he saw the injury. He pushed her out of the room and closed the door. He carried her downstairs. The other freshies were in the living room waiting for him.
He nodded at them. “Code 457.”
The freshies immediately walked single file into the basement that would lead them to the garage. Eight freshies filled up two cars and Josef put Tangie in the Ferrari he waved them ahead while he tended to her wound.
“It’s not deep….but I’m sure it hurts like hell.” He said gently.
“Will it scar?” Tangie asked.
“No, you don’t need any stitches, we’ll get it cleaned at Mick’s.”
“Josef what was it?”
“I’m guessing a ghost, poltergeist, something like that.”
“You don’t know?’
“Sweetheart, I’ve never seen a ghost and I didn’t hear anything until the vase broke.
Tangie’s jaw dropped. “That banging could wake the dead.”
“No, Doll, the living. I don’t think vampires can see ghosts because we’re different levels of dead.
“Why would a ghost show up at Casa Kostan?” Tangie wondered
“It’s almost Halloween. In the old days they said the veil between the living and the dead is at it’s thinnest.”
“So you think he wants to talk to one of us? Tangie guessed. “Maybe Aqua.”
Josef shrugged. “I’m not sure if it’s Aqua or if she’s just more open to the paranormal. She’s always watching Ghost Hunters on TV.
When Josef and Tangie arrived at Mick’s apartment the other girls had already taken over the place. They were searching the kitchen for snacks and Beth was asking Mick to explain Code 457
Mick said. “If Josef’s house is compromised the girls are supposed to do to pre-determined locations. I’m 457. He smelled the blood on Tangie. “Is she okay?”
“She just needs to clean up and get changed. “Beth, could she…..
“Sure, I’ll get her something to wear.
“Go with Beth and tell her what happened.” Josef said kindly.
Mick waited until they were out of earshot and said. “What did happen?”
“I think I have a ghost.”
“There’s no such thing as ghosts.” Mick said.
“That’s what I thought…..I may have been mistaken.”
Mick looked like he just found out Santa Claus wasn’t real. “You told me that. Coraline told me that. Ghosts aren’t real.”
“I think vampires can’t see them but they might be…..very real.”
“Why would a ghost take up residence in the freshie wing? Mick asked
“I don’t know. He looked at the pretty blonde freshie who first noticed the disturbance. “Aqua, come here.”
She hurried over. “Yes, Josef?”
“How long have you been hearing noises?”
“About a week but he’s been getting louder every night.”
“He?” Josef asked.
“Oh yes. It’s a man.”
“How can you tell?” Mick asked.
“It feels like a man. When I’m changing clothes he stops banging like he’s turning away.”
Josef raised his eyebrow. “A gentlemanly ghost?”
Aqua let out a nervous giggle. “I know it sounds weird but sometimes I hear what sounds like whispering.
“Can you make out any words?”
“Aqua nodded. “John…..Whitman, Whitney
Josef whistled through his teeth. “Whitley?”
Aqua shrugged. “Maybe.”
The two vampires exchanged looks, how could they get rid of an enemy they couldn’t see or hear?
