Love this! This would easily pull in a reader even if they had never heard of Mick and had no idea he had some extra "skills." :notworthy: :notworthy: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I just love a good mystery...and REALLY love a Mick with a purpose. :cloud9:
So much of what Mick had learned over the years, the mistakes, the successes, the consistency of human motives, had formed his own set of rules, his SOP. He smiled at the memory of an ageing, celluloid gumshoe, frozen in black and white, dame on his arm, fedora firmly in place, educating his audience. Mick St. John’s rule number one: know your client.
Mick in a nutshell when it comes to his work - although I do love the visual I get of Mick as a gumshoe in the 30's.
Even if he hadn't noticed the Lincoln Continental as it pulled up to the intersection, he could feel it, the crackle, the electricity, the anticipation, the echoes of other raiders on foreign lands. Mick felt it in his bones, the blood memory of battle.
How much did I love this? Just a very subtle reminder of what Mick is underneath the veneer of civility he wears.

Lovely, Red! Off to part 2!

:smooch: Thank you, sweetie. I love that you enjoyed this.

Mick with a purpose make my little heart sing - even when he's still desperate and downbeat, he's on his way...

what a fantastic beginning, Red. I really love the prose, the crisp pacey feel of the burgeoning mystery, and the way you bring us into Mick's head, letting us know what he knows.

Woot!!! Thanks so much. :hearts: :hearts: I love thinking about what Mick would have been like at this period in his life (as opposed to all the other periods in his life, of course  ) and it was fun to focus on a case.

Parts 2 and 3 are completed and posted...

What a great choice for the time period you've set this in..... Mick's life has got to be truly unsettled right now, with Coraline gone and little Beth just discovered, but the job is something that really grounds and steadies him. This story has the feel of the earliest episodes, and I love seeing Mick comparing himself to a classic noir P.I. on celluloid. (No wonder he starts off in the first episode with a voice over about good detective stories.) It's great to see his toughness, competence, and the sheer joy he takes in the work - plus his look on it as a hunt, which must be most satisfying to his vampire self!
