Just browsing in the library looking for fics that I haven't left a recent note on (so I don't totally wear out my welcome around here). This is a lovely exposition of what Beth was thinking in those moments in that dirty, damp motel bathroom with the cockroaches and a vampire near death.
Yet everything pivoted on her decision to save her guardian angel here.
They saved each other.

This is so good! Emotions put to words as only a truly gifted writer can do.
Since I am neither gifted nor a writer, all I can say is "Thank You" for adding such emotional depth to that episode and that scene.
If I may pick out just one of the many things in this piece that was exceptional - it was Beth's understanding that saving a life, any life, forever alters a person. So true! And yet until you wrote it I had never considered that act by itself would have a profound affect on any relationship - let alone one as complicated as theirs.

Thank you so much, Lupine.
I love that you picked out the bit about the impact of Beth saving Mick's life - we all saw how deeply Mick was affected by having saved Beth and then we got to see that depth of emotion reciprocated, only this time, as a knowing act between equals.

One of the interesting things about finding a treasure like this, read and enjoyed years ago and now enjoyed again, is that they are a measure of how your perceptions change. Other factors, not truly acknowledged stand out clearly.
Beth truly gets it, even at this early stage of their relationship. Mick is so certain that she doesn't, but she does. She understands him, perhaps better than he understands himself, and her committment to him is amazing even with Josh still very much a part of her life.
Absolutely lovely.
Thank you, Red!
