Milagra was healthy baby girl. After a series of medical tests and screenings, the pediatrician could find nothing wrong in her development. In fact she was developing at a rate that simply could not be explained.
Dr. Bryce Harris was the leading physician in infant development and he had followed the medical history of baby Milagra quite closely. At first it was feared that she would be mildly retarded due to the coma, but as of yet, her brain activity was functioning normal. And normal for her was along the lines of a 3 year old judging by the scan he was looking at. He thought perhaps the technician had mixed up the results with another child, but it was confirmed that he looking at the brain waves of one Milagra Katherine Ferguson aged 18 months.

Amy hadn’t realized how hard it was raising a baby, but she found herself exhausted all day long.
“You look awful Amy, no offense” Zoe said picking Milagra up in her arms.
“None taken. You know, no one ever tells you how hard it is” she said with smile.
“I know. You should hear Beth’s stories about Gabe. But at least you don’t have to worry about this little angel draining a neighbor’s cat”.
“I can’t believe he did that” Amy said laughing.
“But the doctor said she’s fine?” Zoe asked cautiously. Zoe was always afraid that she had acted in haste in offering Milla vampire blood.
“Zoe don’t worry. She’s fine. Dr. Harris said that she has no development disorders and she’s perfectly healthy” Amy said.
“Okay, but if something happens you have to let me know” Zoe said finally.
“Trust me, I will. And we have no plans to buy a cat!” Amy said laughing over her coffee.

Ted watched Amy place Mila in her crib and kiss her lightly on the forehead. He quietly walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her.
“She’s beautiful, isn’t she?” He asked softly.
“Yes, she is” Amy sighed as they closed the door and behind them.
“You look tired honey” Ted said noticing the dark circles under her eyes.
“Well, Milla may look like the little angel, but she can be a handful.” Amy said lying back on the sofa.
“At least she sleeps through the night” Ted said. He had always heard other parents complain about children who cried all night long. But Mila, slept all through the night without interruption.
“I guess we got lucky” Amy said. Ted was staring off in the distance.
“Yeah, but you don’t think that has anything to do with the blood they gave her?” He asked suddenly looking at Amy.
“Ted we’ve gone over this. Mila’s fine and healthy. The doctors checked her out and found no problems. So, what she sleeps through the night. I say we count our blessings.” Amy said kissing his lips lightly. But something bothered Ted. What if his child wasn’t really normal? Zoe said that vampire blood had never been given to an infant before.

Mila's immune system is different when she is an infant than it will be at any other time during her life. Perhaps at this time, she is able to receive an infusion of vampire blood and encorporate it into her system in a way that would not happen at any other stage of life.

Fabulous start! Looking forward to more.

Thank you!

You're welcome Jen, I even quote you in this story!

Gabriel found his wife in the basement which was where she spent all of her time.
“Hey honey, how was your day?” he asked kissing her on the neck.
“Good. I worked with Julian most of the day then stopped by to see Amy and Mila”
“How are things?” Gabriel asked slowly. He had been on the opposing side of the whole giving vampire blood to an infant situation, so he was always concerned as to how the little baby was doing.
“She looks beautiful and healthy and vibrant.” Zoe said “She had a check up and the doctor said she was perfectly fine.”
“Okay. I just want to make sure that we didn’t cross the line. Ted would never forgive us if something happened to Mila, and then we’d have a more pressing issue on our hands”
“I know. But let’s not worry about that now. Someone very wise once said “worries are wounds we inflict on ourselves” Zoe said.

Dr. Harris looked at the baby sitting quietly before him. Usually, babies had a hard time staying still, but Milagra Ferguson simply sat and observed him in a curious fashion. It made the doctor uncomfortable. He knew in the back of his mind, that this little girl knew everything that was being done to her. So much he believed this that he found himself explaining every procedure to the baby.
“Okay, I’m going to place this instrument to your chest here” he said pointing. “This will allow me to listen to your heartbeat”. He placed the stethoscope lightly to her chest and listened. Then he walked over to the other side of the table to retrieve the medication for her last immunization shot. He walked towards the table. Most babies knew what was coming when they were at this age and they all immediately started to wail, but the little girl simply stared at him and waited patiently.
“I’m going to inject you with this needle” he said. Still the baby did nothing but stare at him. If he hadn’t checked her heartbeat mere seconds ago, he would have thought she was dead. He waved his hand in front of her face and she didn’t blink. She was asleep but her eyes were wide open. The doctor gently injected the shot in her arm. The little girl’s pupils dilated then she smiled sweetly at the doctor. It was as if she had turned herself off.

Amy was holding Mila on her lap while Dr. Harris went over Mila’s examination.
“Mrs. Ferguson……I’m not sure how to say this, but your daughter displays traits of nocturnal lagophthalmos. That is to say that she fell asleep with her eyes completely open.” He began to explain.
Amy looked up in surprise.
“What does that mean? Is it serious?” she asked anxiously.
“No. Rest assured, it’s not serious. However the fact that she displayed this at 18 months is in a word curious. Usually you witness this condition when babies are newborns. It lasts for maybe 2 months at the most. I’d like to run some more tests to rule out eye lid malformation”
Amy closed he eyes for second and knew that she would have to call Zoe.

Julian examined the little girl. It took him close to an hour. After which he and Zoe spoke alone while Amy sat looking stricken at what this could all mean.

“It is my belief that that giving the baby Brian’s blood to speed her recovery has…… I’m afraid she has also picked up some very special traits as well.” Julian told Zoe.
“Oh God Julian! Will she become a vampire because of this?” Zoe asked finally realizing what a risk they all took
“No. She will not become a vampire. She will still be a normal healthy little girl, but she will be…….enhanced”
“Enhanced how?”
“Well, her demeanor will never be that of a little baby. She will have high intelligence, and there may be some circumstances of great strength, of course more traits will appear as she becomes older. We will have to wait and see.”
“So, she has all the strengths of a vampire with none of the weakness?”
“That would be correct. But now we must focus on this doctor. He is suspicious and that will cause many more problems” Julian sighed. “Amy said he suspected eye lid malformation. We must have that speculation continue. It will be a matter of time before he decides to test her blood. And that must not happen” Julian finished. Zoe nodded and left to find Amy and break the news.

Fabulous!

My first thought is to wonder if she will develop more quickly, as Gabe did. As intelligent as Mila clearly is, it may be a good idea to let her spend some time around other children her age to observe them, and then talk to her about mimicking their behavior when around the doctor from now on. After a few months of this, I would find some excuse to get another doctor! Finding a good doctor is generally the goal but in this case, this doctor is a bit too good!

Realy interested to see how this plays out!

Thank you!

Jenna

“Amy, sit down” Zoe began.
“Just tell me Zoe.” Amy said firmly.
“It’s not all bad. Mila isn’t a vampire or anything like that, but………Brian’s blood is giving her some cleaner characteristics” Zoe said slowly wanting Amy to really understand what she was saying.
“You’re saying my child is behaving like Brian?” Amy asked
“In a word yes. Yes she is” Zoe said not quite sure how Amy would take this latest development. Amy put her hand over mouth and laughed out loud.
“Amy?” Zoe asked clearly mystified by her friend’s laughter.
“Zoe, that’s the bad news? My daughter is going turn out like Brian? All babies should be so lucky!”
“Amy before you get too happy there are other things that come into play. Julian thinks her strength will grow. She could inadvertently hurt another child”
“Then she’ll have to be taught. Look Zoe, Brian gave me my daughter back and whatever she turns out to have is worth it! She’s alive Zoe!” Amy said.
“You’re not upset?”
“Why would I be upset? Brian's a genius! And my daughter never cries! I should be dancing!” she said continuing to laugh.

Dr. Harris was looking over Milagra Ferguson’s chart again. There had to be something he was missing. Her blood type was listed as AB negative. That was rarest blood type. Maybe that had something to with her development. He would have to get that baby back into the office for those tests.

Telling Ted about this wasn’t going to be easy Amy thought to herself. While Ted had finally accepted the fact that vampires weren’t bad people, if he felt that his only daughter was turning into one, he would go insane!

When Ted came home from work, Amy decided to tell him right away.
“Ted I have something to tell you” She said. Ted looked at her for a moment then his eyes grew wide.
“Something’s wrong with Mila?” he asked in a panicked voice
“No, she’s fine. She’s better than fine but I found out today that Mila is……well gifted” She said.
“Well that’s great news!” He said confused about why that would bother her.
“She’s gifted because of vampire blood and before you jump to any conclusion she’s not turning into a vampire. She’s just taking on the traits that Brian possesses.”
“Mila is turning into Brian?” Ted said frowning.
“Sort of. She’s quiet because Brian’s quiet. She’ll probably be as smart as him and she might have some kind of super strength”
Ted looked at his pretty wife and tried to take in all she was telling him. While the strength thing might pos some problems, everything else didn’t sound so bad.
“She’ll be brainy and strong. Just like her mother” Ted said giving Amy a hug. “That’s every parent’s dream”

Parents given the news that their child is gifted is always taken well, but those gifts can be a two edged sword, and I think that will be the case here.

Mila already understands a lot of what is going on around her, but the time is coming when those same special abilities will isolate her--be a barrier between herself and other children her age. She will see the world differently, spotting juxtapositions and patterns that others don't see...

Looking forward to more!

Thank you!

Jenna

Dr. Harris was frustrated. Mrs. Ferguson had canceled her daughter’s appointment. He had his nurse ring her and stress to her the importance of keeping these appointments especially when children were little, but Mrs. Ferguson had not made another appointment. Something was wrong. Finding he could no longer wait he drove over to their house. He would insist on seeing the child.

Mila was if anything a patient child. She appeared to be always thinking. Amy knew that when she spoke to her, Mila understood everything she had said, but just couldn’t speak the words.
“So what would you like to eat this morning?” Amy asked holding up a box of oatmeal and a banana. “Do you want the banana?” Amy said holding the fruit in front of her. Mila looked but did not respond. “Or would you like the oatmeal?” Amy asked holding the oatmeal in front of her. Mila began to grin and laugh. “Ok, oatmeal it is. You’ve made a fine choice” Amy smiled back at her.

Brian had often wanted to stop by and see how the little girl was doing, but always changed his mind. Today however, he decided he would pay a short visit just to see how things were going.

Dr. Harris pulled up in front of the house and walked on to the porch.
Amy looked down at Mila.
“Ok, you wait right there while I get the door” Amy opened the door to find Dr. Harris standing on her porch.
“Dr. Harris, what on Earth are you doing here?” Amy asked in surprise.
“My nurse told me that you had canceled your appointment and had not rang to re schedule. I just wanted to make sure things were alright” He said a voice that sounded a bit on edge.
“I’m sorry you came all this way doctor but your nurse should have told you that I’m seeking another pediatrician for Mila”
“Was there some problem?” He asked.
“No, but I think now that Mila’s out of the woods, she would benefit more from a pediatrician instead of a specialist.” Amy said coolly.
“Mrs. Ferguson you have to understand that what your daughter’s recovery was miraculous to say the least, but miracles often come with strings attached I’m afraid.” He pleaded.
“Still, I think we’re going to take our chances” Amy said trying to close the door. Dr. Harris placed his foot inside the door.
“Look Mrs. Ferguson, I don’t want to hurt you, but I must see your daughter” he said in a threatening voice. Amy was about to scream but she saw the small gun he was holding and she knew that he would gladly shoot her and take her daughter. Amy slowly backed away from him and allowed him access.
“Now where is your daughter?” he demanded.
“Don’t hurt her” Amy pleaded.
“I have no intention of hurting the girl. What kind of butcher do you think I am?” he said loudly “I merely want to examine her and take a sample of her blood” he said pointing the revolver right at her. “Take me to her” he demanded again.
Amy began walking to the kitchen. At first Mila smiled brightly at her mother, but she began to frown when she saw the doctor behind her. Amy walked over to the highchair where Mila was sitting and stood in next to her.
“See, she’s perfectly happy and healthy” Amy said.
“Oh, of that I have no doubt” he said slowly walking towards the baby. As he got closer, he could see the baby’s face clouded with anger. “Ah, as I suspected. She knows exactly what’s going on” he said as he reached into his bag for a syringe.

They need help and they need it now.

I don't fault the doctor in his persistence, and I think he really has the childs best interests at heart, but in this case much more harm than good can result from this encounter and he has no idea the situation he is in.

He could wind up in the tarpits.

I wish Gabe would come by for a visit right about now...

Thank you!

Brian sensed that something was wrong. The baby was in danger. He sped out of his car and into the house. He grabbed the man from behind and held him tight.
“Brian!” Amy sighed. “Thank God you’re here!”
“Did he hurt the baby?” Brian asked through clenched teeth
“No. He didn’t”
Brian looked at the man
“What do you want here?” Brian asked in anger he could barely contain.
“I….just wanted a sample of blood from the little girl.” Dr. Harris stammered.
“Why?” Brian asked but he already knew. Mila was displaying certain gifts.
“I think that something may be unusual in the baby’s blood”
“Will she die?” Brian asked.
“Die? No. Of course not” the doctor said in surprise
“Then her blood is of no concern to you” Brian replied. “Call Gabriel” Brian said to Amy. “And you will have seat” He said pushing the doctor into a chair at the table
“W..what are you going to do to me?” He asked in a fearful voice.
Brian said nothing.

“Dr. Harris where have you been all morning?” He heard his nurse call to him. The doctor turned to face her but said nothing. “Doctor, are you alright?” she asked. “Maybe you should lie down for a minute. That sun is unbearable” she said in all motherly concern for the young doctor.

Amy looked at Brian as he picked Mila up in his arms.
“How did you know?” Amy asked.
“Mila and I have a bond. I can sense when she is fearful or upset”
“Can she speak to you?”
“Yes. If she wishes. Like right now she is saying that she loves you and Ted very much. And to not be afraid of her” Brian said looking at Mila.
Amy stared at her daughter in surprise. Then walked over to take her from Brian arms.
“I love you” she said kissing Mila.

It was agreed that Brian would spend time with Mila each week, to better prepare her for the life that was coming to embrace her. Nicole saw a new side of Brian. One she had never seen before. He would have made a great father she thought to herself as she watched them play.

“You know Brian, you should just give up” Gabriel said with a chuckle.
“Not yet” Brian said as he moved his chess piece. Mila studied the board intently and pushed her piece into place with a huge grin
“And that would be check mate Brian” Gabriel said laughing. “You got beat by girl! A two year old girl!”
“Shut up Gabe! She beat you too!” Brian exclaimed.

“So who won this time” Ted said from behind them.
“Mila won” Brian said with a smile.

This is just lovely. Brian is a great uncle, and she is growing up in her mind as fast as Gabriel, but not in body, which makes it easier to conceal from the world. I love that she has a message for her parents. :hearts:

Ella

Perfect ending!

Gabe simply wiped that Doctor's mind clean. Safer for him, safer for them.

That is such a handy talent to have! Will make everyone's life a lot easier!

The road ahead for Mila will not be all roses. She will grow up always having to hide a part of herself, and that will be a heavy burden for a child to bear. Fortunately, she will have an amazing support system behind her.

Thank you!

Jenna
