Passing the Event Horizon - Challenge #135 PG

Post by jen »

Disclaimer: Don't own Moonlight. Not making any money. Just doing this for fun.

“You don’t understand--if he's discussing this, he’s already accepted the idea.”

“Why now? For years, he has brushed off my attempts to bring it up.”

“Mick's nearing ninety three and you'll soon be thirty--the same age as when he was Turned. The century mark's very significant for vampires. It has been called by many names--in the late 18th century it was called the ‘Twilight Time’“

“Like the old song?”

“Yes. There had been talk about picking a new name for a couple of decades, but there wasn’t any rush until that movie about the teen vamps. Now, it‘s ‘passing the event horizon’--when a vampire’s connections to the human world weaken and perhaps disappear: friends and family die off and the world no longer resembles the one they knew. After that, most vampires are less drawn to humans for anything other than a food source.”

“To love us is to watch us die…”

“Excuse me?”

“Simone Walker once said that's how vampires see humans. ‘We‘re just a blip in their lifespan, to love us is to watch us die.’”

“Aptly put. Beth, he wants you with him.”

“How does it feel to be Turned?”

“Mick has told you what he felt, but if you know what's happening the experience is altogether different: sensual, erotic. You'd be placing your self completely in his hands. Do you trust him that much?”

“Of course. It’s the only way we can be together. I’m ready.”

Nicely done, Jenna  ....I could see and hear Josef and Beth in this.

Loved the snark about Twilight and working in a quote from the show, but really loved how you put the vampire's time separation from humanity into perspective. The century mark would indeed see friends and family dead and a completely different world than the one they were born into.

I, also, can see and hear Beth and Josef having this talk. Loved the notion of 'the twilight time' - that was very clever and has so many interesting possibilities for a fic. You end the story at a place I think Beth would have no trouble reaching . . . Ready.

This is great. The concept of a vampire losing connections to the human world is great, and it would make Mick more accepting of turning Beth. Josef is smoothing the way for both of them. Great 250 words!

Really nice dialogue between Josef and Beth, Jenna--you have the rhythms of their speech down so well. I love the idea of vampires having a term for the stage at which a vampire moves into a comfort zone with his new existence, and the names are perfect! :clapping: Now let's just get Beth through the turning properly, no sleeping beauty issues, please!!! And then our beautiful vamp couple can begin to enjoy their life together, beyond the event horizon. :hearts:

I totally agree about no Sleeping Beauty issues, even though Beth's words at the end of the fic were almost a direct quote from the last line from Sarah Whiley's diary.

Even though vampires strive to stay under the radar and try to 'blend into the background, much of the issues in their lives now have totally different meanings. For example, food is now blood; silver is now a major threat. sunlight is not good, freezers are for sleeping--not where you keep the ice cream and frozen peas. and the list just goes on from there. Over time, I would be surprised if they did not develop terms for various issues that were common to them.

Thank you for reading and commenting!
