The Door - a Josef POV drabble - PG

Post by Lilly »

This is another "Between the Lines" drabble from Sleeping Beauty.

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

-------

“Mick... Beth…”

I swore I’d never open this door – this wound – for anyone else to see. Call it fate or failure – this scar on my soul cut so deep that it still hemorrhages just below the surface and no amount of time – or blood – will ever heal it.

Vampires aren’t supposed to dream, you know? But I had one once. And I locked it away behind this door. The truth is – my heart stopped beating four centuries ago; but this is the place it’s laid to rest.

This is my sanctuary, my purgatory, my reason...

I so felt for Josef there. Jason did a great job of conveying his hesitation and sadness in this very short scene in the hallway. And you did a great job of capturing the feelings of Josef in such a few words. Great work.

Thanks, everyone!

MS - this isn't new -- it just took me a while to get around to posting it. I'm so glad you liked it.

I really think that the scene of Josef opening that door was so symbolic. It was the first time he'd opened that part of himself to anyone. There was no cover, no place to hide anymore -- just raw and rare honesty.

Lilly, this is really wonderful. I love these between-the-lines drabbles. When done well, they express all the things that had to go unsaid on the show, but which the actors gave us through their expressions and body language. This little scene is so very poignant. My heart breaks for Josef every time I watch it. I agree with you--this is Josef finally exposing a part of himself he's never, ever admitted to. And it's very hard to see him so vulnerable.

Beautiful!

I couldn't leave without rereading this one, because it's just so damned deep. I don't know how you managed to cram so much into 100 words, Lilly. But I guess that's the beauty of drabbles: they force you to distill the story into its very essence. This one is essential Josef, but it's a Josef we almost never saw. Josef with the shell off--vulnerable, soft, a little uncertain of himself. In that moment before he opened the door, Josef was facing demons that Mick and Beth couldn't imagine. And he was also making the excruciating decision to let any other person--even his dearest friend--into that sacred place. I'm not sure anyone but Mick would have ever been allowed in... and that alone says volumes about their relationship.

This is the one moment I absolutely loved Josef in the series. How you managed to put all his vulnerability in so few lines, it amazes me!! Most drabbles do, but this one, it was just heartbreaking. :thud:

Wonderful!

In SB, Josef showed us that he had a heart, that he could love and be hurt and before that I was convinced otherwise.

Beautifully done!

Thank you, jen! :rose:

I think we got a glimpse of Josef's soul at the end of BC, and there were hints throughout that there was great depth there behind the mask, but -- you're right -- we didn't really see his heart until SB.

Lilly

This is fabulous.

I think you are absolutely right in that Sleeping Beauty gave us a glimpse into the heart and soul of Josef Kostan. Truthfully, there were moments when I was starting to not like Josef. I know. That face, that wonderful snark, the loyalty to his friends--what's not to love but there was so much he kept shadowed, I couldn't help but wonder about what he wasn't telling.

Then, caught a glimpse that beneath those shadows was a man just as vulnerable as any, and just as much a romantic.

Lovely!
