I was furious with Beth the first time I watched that scene. Horrified. How dare she say such a hurtful thing! I guess it's because Mick looked like he was just punched in the gut. After the shock of it wore off and I watched it a few times I wasn't angry with Beth anymore. Like a few of you have said, it was Mick I was upset with. It was selfish of him to go see Beth at that time to absolve himself. If he'd gone there just to see if she's okay, just to comfort her, I can see that. Even if he just wanted to say he was sorry. But just "I'm sorry." But no.....he has to go one with the "it's not my fault". Truth be told, it's not but Beth was in no place to hear it.

Even the "then why do you go on living?" didn't bother me so much. It's actually a very good question. Beth doesn't see vampirism the same way Mick does - she doesn't see it as a curse. So if it SOOOO bad, that he let a man die rather than Turn him, how can he stand it himself?

I know this is a little late, but the music Trevor Morris wrote for the scene where Josh is shot (Saving Josh) was also played during Mick's re-turning in FTP....what I didn't realize was the connection between the two - in FTP, the music is the background for his plea to Josef to turn him, so that he can save Beth. So 'Saving Josh' is now about saving Beth.

What a great point, DSR! That's a wonderful parallel, and I hadn't thought of it.

I absolutely love the analyses of this scene. Again, this whole episode was wonderful, but this is just gut-wrenching. When I first saw it, I was angry with neither of them. I understood Beth lashing out, man, she is in a world of hurt. Whoever made the comment about the candles and wine, I'm with you. When you're like that, you sit in the dark.

P-gal and others, made some really fantastic points about Mick's reasons for being there. I think you're right. Initially I thought he'd just come to check on her, but it was definitely more than that. He wanted absolution. Not about his decision not to turn Josh ( sure, I think he also needed comfort because he'd been present during the death of a human being), but I think his presence there that night was really all about making sure Beth didn't abandon him. She'd never rejected him the way she had at the lake. She'd always been totally for him. But this time she'd totally turned away and was angry in a way he'd never witnessed before. I think his VO was totally right, she was his reason for living, and if he lost her as a result of this, which may have seemed likely to him at that point, he wouldn't have a reason to go on. He'd go back to his meaningless eternity. A thought too horrible for him to contemplate. So I'm not angry at Mick. Wrong timing? Sure was, but I understand why.

That makes total sense. I was so fixated on seeing the scene one way that i entirely missed that detail.

The totally open and vulvnerable expression on Mick's face during the conversation was really telling.

Thanks for pointing out the different sides.
