Moonlight Episode Discussion - Ep 8: 12:04AM

Post by GuardianAngel »

Episode Eight: 12:04

The first scene opens with Mick digging the bullet out of his arm that he received in Fever when Leni shot him.

Image

His VO explains that aside from silver buckshot a vampire can leave a bullet in but it's inconvenient when going through metal detectors.

Image

He goes on to explain that their skin reforms but the old wounds sometimes still ache. Mick's thoughts are interrupted by a Buzzwire report on his television. Beth is covering a story on a killer on death row whose time had come.

Image

Mick's VO continues, saying how humans have their own coping mechanisms when something goes wrong. Some become obsessed, some vengeful and others (as Beth's face is on screen) just block the whole thing out.

The scene changes to where the execution is taking place. Beth is continuing her report right outside. She tells the camera that the execution was scheduled for midnight in the hopes of reducing the number of death penalty protestors and the killer's 'family' - a.k.a. his followers. Beth catches the D.A. who put the Donovan Shepherd away and interviews him. She wants to know if he thinks justice was being served. His answers (surprise!) is yes.

Image

The killer ruined a lot of lives and, hopefully, his death will give them closure. She asks him why those that Shepherd calls 'family' will not be admitted to watch. The law does't recognize them as family members. Only the relatives of the victims will be allowed. And one survivor, Audrey Pell. The D.A. leaves and Beth continues, explaining that it was Miss Pell's testamony against Shepherd that put him away. She was only 10 when she hid in a closet while her parents and 4 others were murdered.

Image

Beth signs in and introduces herself to Miss Pell who tells her she's not giving any interviews. Beth's not looking for one - she was just checking that the girl was okay. As they stand there Pell tells Beth that she's not sure if she can watch. Beth asks if it feels like justice and gets a quick 'yes' in return. Pell wants him gone - for good.

The proceedings are started, the procedure is explained. Donovan was given his last meal and given a chance to pray. We are shown his meal (which he did not eat) and the priest kneeling with him.

Image

The killer is walked out and escorted to the execution room. The audience are seated - Beth takes a seat next to Audrey. Donovan is strapped in and the curtain opens so he can be seen. Audrey has a flashback to when she saw him as a child. She's peeking out from where she hid in the closet.

Image

He sees her and tells her "Hello sweetheart. I see you." *shudder* Was I the only one that he totally creeped out?

Image

Beth takes her hand and assures her that he can't hurt her anymore. Shepherd is allowed to speak some last words. He tells the audience that he's had a lot of time to think on his choices and actions and he doesn't regret a bit of it.

Image

He doesn't seek forgiveness - only the blood of those who crossed him. He will live on and they will die, screaming his name.

Image

A little upsetting, yeah.

The machine is turned on and Shepherd is put to death. Beth finishes her story, reporting that Donovan was given a lethal injection at midnight. She also reports his last words which are witnessed by his 'family' outside. They are delighted by his what he said.

Image

Pell leaves the building, walking by the crowd and is a freaked out by his followers, many of which resemble him with their evil stares and long hair.

Image

Beth puts a comforting arm around her and ushers her away.

Beth is very sweet to Audrey. I really thought when I first watched this that she was angling for an interview even if she said she wasn't. But that wasn't the case. Do you think that she saw some of herself in Audrey - the traumatized child?

This guy scared me. Good actor... very scary as a human... even more so as a vamp!

Sometimes they cast the guest stars very very right.

That's actually what my daughter calls this ep... the scary dude ep... you're a mind-reader, coco! :giggle:

My major complaint about this ep... and here comes shallow Grace... is that there is nearly 6 minutes of no-Mick while they off Shepherd... and later on there is I think another 4 minutes or so of no-Mick!

Deprivation!

Yes, GA, I also thought Beth was just angling for a story but by the time she walks her out she appears genuinely concerned for the girl and I do think she identified a little bit with the horror of her past.

Okay, my biggest complaint about this ep...no Josef, darn it.

But aside from that...I love many, many things about 12:04.

One thing that strikes me is that Audrey really only supposed to be a couple of years younger than Beth. Yet she seems very much younger, to me. Almost childlike.

Yes, I agree Lucky, she presents as a very young girl. I guess her emotional development stalled at the point of the trauma.

Tho I think part of her appearing to be so much younger is the cherubic face and the squeaky voice...

In a recent Mentalist she played a kid still living at home, tho... so she does appear very young...

I liked the reference to Pride and Prejudice in this ep... I think they had figured out who their audience was by now... :giggle:

I remember watching this one for the first time live. It was my fave ep, until LLF came along. ;) It has flaws, but it's a very exciting episode especially when Shepherd gets into the FOS and attacks Beth. I needed a nap after the episode. LOL Casting Gideon was fantastic! He scared the heebie-jeebies outta me! :eek2:

As much as "Vampire solidarity, rah rah rah..." makes me smile, "Hello, sweetheart...I see you." gives me shivers.

I believe that Beth absolutely identifies with Audrey, although maybe she doesn't admit it to herself at first. Beth's very good at compartmentalizing, and it seems to me that she's squelched the horror of her childhood kidnapping pretty thoroughly. But we already know that she gets nightmares about it...

I thought it was very interesting the way they portrayed Audrey as so childlike. I liked all the guest actors in this episode, although I agree that it is marred by lack of Josef AND sections with lack of Mick. However, we also get some of the best Mick scenes in this episode, so I guess it evens out.

Shepherd is definitely a horrifying character, reeeeeeeally evil. I thought they did a great job with him.

That tag line... and its delivery... was quite... er... memorable. None of the ML vamps scared me but him. He truly did.

I have never seen him in anything else... has anyone seen that actor in anything else????

And you are, as always, so right, Alle... the little Mick we got was some of the best, kick-ass Mick ever! In fact I cannot wait for those caps! Kudos, regarding that, as always to our hostess GA!!!!!

Thank you, grace. I love doing the screencaps - one of my problems is that I want to screencap every frame. Especially when it's a Mick scene. But I'm limiting myself from now on.

I know it's mean but I got tired of Audrey after a while. I felt bad for her in the beginning and then she got on my nerves. Shepherd totally creeped me out - I loved him.

This was not one of my favorite epis but I did like it for the action and because we saw another side to Beth besides the pushy, career woman.

Trust me, no one will complain about Mick caps... but don't set yourself up for doing too much, Sweetie! We'll take whatever you give us!

And I agree about Audrey... tho I did feel sorry for her (I actually got more tired of the actress in that Mentalist ep...).

And while also not one of my faves, it was a pretty great procedural ep... This one, IMO, would pretty much entertain anybody...

hey GA, don't stress about the screencaps. Do what you think works. I have to say, I really look forward to your commentaries under the cap. They're a delight. Always such an accurate precis of the action, plus gut bustingly funny.
