Episode Five: Arrested Development.

Summary: Mick hunts a teenage vampire who is hunting female escorts he finds on the Internet. Beth tracks down a story about a dead prostitute. Their paths cross while trying to avoid each other after sharing an intimate moment.

Josh and Beth visited the doctor. Looks like Josh pushed for it and accompanied Beth to make sure she went. He says now that the doctor told them those marks on Beth's arm are okay, they know they are. Josh asks Beth if she feels better now and she responds that she felt fine before. This was about him feeling better.

Image

Josh looks at the bite marks and says that they are weird.

Image

Josh comments (ain't he chatty Cathy) that it's weird that they haven't seen or heard from Mick since the desert. Mick was there almost every time they turned around and now he's gone. Josh thinks it's odd that he hasn't checked to see if Beth's alright.

Image

Beth listens and has a flashback of Mick feeding from her.

Image

Mick enters the Medical center and almost plows over a woman with a baby carriage.

Image

His VO tells us that what we want doesn't always matter. He gives a few examples of what a person might want and gives avoiding someone for their own good because you've drank their blood out in the desert as one.

He goes to get on the elevator but it's too full and he winds up having to wait for another.

Image

The VO continues to say that if the universe wants something different, well, you can run but you can't hide. Mick turns to get on another elevator and bumps into Josh and Beth exiting their elevator.

Image

Beth and Josh say they were just talking about Mick. Mick asks what they are doing there. Beth says they went for a blood test. Mick begins to ask if they're getting married. Beth finishes the question for him and quickly denies it.

Image

Josh doesn't look too happy. His smile is forced.

Image

Mick looks releived.

Image

Beth explains that they are there about her injury from the chain link fence. She gives him a knowing look. She asks Mick what he's doing there. He stammers a bit. He's there for blood. He tags on 'work'. Beth tells Mick she's left him a message. In VO Mick tells us she's left him four. Beth tells him to call her when he gets a chance. Josh says, better yet, why doesn't Mick stop by for a dinner they're having. A one year anniversary dinner. Beth jumps in to say that she doesn't think Mick would want to come.

Image

Mick says he would come, but he can't.

Image

Mick congratulates them and gets on the elevator. Josh and Beth smile over the awkward moment.

May I begin by saying I just love Mick in this jacket?

And the jacket with that particular sweater combination is most pleasing.

I am sure there are wise and cogent things to say about this ep and these pics... and just when you think you know how shallow my pool is I drain another few inches, I know I know...

But still, look at him there!!!

*splashes around in the shallows with Grace*

I loved that they tried to introduce some reality here. Josh should have been concerned about Beth's injuries - so he did something about it. And Mick would have avoided Beth's calls, because he had no idea how to deal with her. The vampire version of the morning after....

And just to prove I can splash around in the shallows with the rest of you...Mick's VO about Beth's phone messages...possibly the sexiest tones I have heard in my life. He's talking to Josh and Beth, then his voice drops about half an octave, and whispers in your ear.."Actually, it was four."

:thud:

Okay, moving on...

Oh, Lucky. Thank you so much for pointing that out. Had to listen to it a few times just to make sure I agree with your assessment.

Yep. Sexiest. voice. ever.

Oh me oh my...

Well, it is incumbent upon me to share these deep insights, now isn't it?

Yes, his voice is really sexy when he says Beth's left him four messages. I love the fact that he knows exactly how many - he's keeping count. And how brazen is it that she's standing there next to Josh and they are talking to Mick and she tells him to call her!

And that she's called him! It's really no wonder Josh is feeling a little threatened. Not to mention the speed and emphasis with which she makes sure to mention that she and Josh are not getting blood tests for a marriage license. That had to sting a little.

What Josh probably heard:
"Getting married? To this loser? Oh, God, no! Gah! The very idea! Ick!"

Yet the boy stuck with her til death... hero or idiot, I don't know, but the writing was on the freaking wall, on her face, in her words, and on her damn arm...

But back to Mick's face... How cute and crestfallen did his face look when he said, "Bloodtest? Are you two...?" His face was adorable with that line... and at this point I mean this as a compliment to Mr. O'Loughlin's acting... seriously. Of course I do.

And I'm pretty sure i agree with Lucky about the voice, but I think I need to go listen again...

Plus poor Josh just looked so vanilla in this scene. Dull suit, smart shirt and tie = vanilla. And then there's Mick, all bedroom eyes, leather jacket, Henley, jeans.... The boy never stood a chance.

Well...now I had to go and listen to that a few (hundred) times. For research purposes only, of course.

Not that I didn't believe you guys or anything. And certainly not because the husky sound of that man's voice is so very sexy that is makes me forget I have a husband. Nothing like that AT ALL.

Ahem.

Red makes a good point about the differences between Josh and Mick. Straight, middle-of-the-road, perfect-hair Josh in his suit and tie compared to leather-jacketed, big-belt-buckle, blue-jeaned Mick. No surprise Beth is intrigued by Mick and never mind the whole "I'm a vampire" thing he's got going on.

If I'd been Josh, I think I would have been a tad insulted at how quickly Beth jumped in with "Getting married? NO."

Forgot the belt buckle. How the hell did that happen?

And yes, Beth's unseemly haste was hardly subtle. Poor Josh. He was fish food from that point on.

I remember in the olden days how people made fun of Josh (ChickenJosh). I don't think he deserved it. In fact,
BETH: Now is not the right time to have this conversation.

JOSH: Not the right time? It's our anniversary. One year together, and I cooked the chicken for you. Your friends are here.
the chicken bit seems realistic to me. It's sounds so mundane, almost trite up against the panorama of vampire adventure, but meant a lot to him. Sadly, as you have all pointed out, when you also put the picture of Mick up against Mr Buttoned Down White Bread White Meat Suburban Nice Guy, Josh's concerns do seem laughable.

Poor Josh. He put up with a lot! But I still think he was too much of a cipher to give the Mick and Beth relationship much of a challenge.

The belt buckle and the walk across the lobby...the clothes, the look, the voice, the moves....what's not to fall for? :thud:

The walk across the lobby!! Good call, Dark!

Yet that annoying woman with the baby carriage that tripped Mick and who seemed all put out about it... what was HER problem? A man looking like that trips across your baby? Use it, for P's Bob's sakes; get a name, a conversation, something out of it! Missed opportunity.
