The most memorable thing about this scene for me, is Mick's vice. Yeah, so it's always amazing, but there's something about the quiet, knowing tone here that is just gobsmackingly sexy.

And Lucky's right--you can hear the little, quick heartbeat right away, once you know to listen for it. I mistook it for Leni's own heart beating fast out of fear and anxiety...but no, it's definitely a fetal heartbeat.

(Which is why my mother's heart wanted to give her a big hug and urge her to have a nice tall glass of milk instead of a soda--what was that girl thinking!!??) :eyes:

Mick looks just amazingly, perpetually, deliciously cool leaning against his car as the bus drives up, doesn't he?! Man. I have to agree with GA--a dollar bill is not high on the list of things I'd like to swap with Mick, either.

The actress who played Leni was believably jumpy and scared. She was one of my favorite guest actors.

And yes, Red, Mick's voice was just heartstoppingly sexy in that scene. You can hear his sympathy for Leni in his voice, too...she must've been awfully scared not to have been immediately put at ease by Mick...

Meanwhile, back at Josh's office...

Image

Beth is saying that Mick sounds confident that he can get the jump on Leni. Sounding waspish, Josh answers that it seems Mick can get the jump on just about anybody.

One of Josh's workers on the case (now doesn't that sound official!) comes in with a cell phone. It belonged to the cop at the safehouse with Leni and the call log says that it was used to call a phone paid for by Fayed. It looks like he called the hit on the safehouse. Josh calls for a warrant so he can go to Fayed's and check it out.

Image

Back in Victorville....

Mick is getting something to eat and drink for Leni who goes in and gets them a table. Leni tells Mick what happened the night Jack was killed. She remembers that she was frozen, couldn't even scream. Mick says it's probably what saved her life. Leni is suspicious. She thinks he's just trying to butter her up and she tells Mick she's not going back.

Image

Mick expresses his confusion - she had come forward, she wanted to testify, what the hell happened. He refers to Jack as 'this guy' and it pisses Leni off. She tells him she got Jack killed.

Image

Leni gets up and goes to the door. Mick follows and apologizes.

Image

She tells him that Jack was a good guy - he was trying to go straight. Mick shows he understands by adding that Jack did it for her, Leni.

Image

Mick listens to Leni's heartbeat and realizes what the echo was that he hears. It all comes together for Mick. Leni is pregnant.

Image

She's protecting the baby. Testifying puts her in danger and she has the baby to think about now.

I agree that Leni was one of the very best guest stars. The relationship between her and Mick just worked - thrown together in extremis and instantly finding common ground and mutual trust. The little, subtle moments, like the baby conversation at the diner doorway, were beautifully done.

God, I love this episode...

I think this episode had the most compelling scenes, one after another, through the whole thing. It's why it's one of my favorites. It all works - everyone's character is at their best.

So much to love in this episode. Though the arc of it seems to focus on Leni and her safety, I found it to be so illuminating regarding Mick's character. I love how we get the chance to learn more about Mick through his actions and behavior. For instance, when he and Josh are touring the (un)safe house--I found it interesting how Mick wasn't hiding his unorthodox ways while surveying the scene. Sloppiness on his part or cockiness displayed for Josh's sake? I mean, c'mon, the blood "has estrogen in it"? Like that wouldn't raise suspicion? The immediate noticing of the minute amount of blood on the window sill, the jumping down the fire escape with Josh feet away? But the best part, that look he gives Josh at one point, as if to say "yeah, you idiot, I do know what I'm doing, and I'm da*n good at it."

Our fave part is coming up, GA, so I'll hush for now!

I agree that this is one of my favorite episodes and that Leni was a well played character, but did anyone notice that when it dawns on Mick that Leni is pregnant, he pulls back just a little into the shadows. I've often wondered why? Was he in awe of the fact that she was pregnant? Was he afraid of hurting her and the baby? Was he just trying to get out of the sun?

Josh and gang get to Fayed's house. I guess Judge Howard must have made some time off the golf course for Josh.

Image

Josh is fearless. Fayed's muscle doesn't impress him at all.

Image

Beth walks around and comes upon a little girl.

Image

She begins to talk to her but is interrupted by her phone ringing. It's Mick. He tells Beth that Leni is scared but he thinks she's gonna come back with him.

Image

Beth wants to know why she's scared and Mick tells her Leni is pregnant. Beth tells him he has to handl her carefully. He says it's not his forte (I beg to differ) but he's gonna try. Beth hands to phone to Josh who tells Mick that he'll have Victorville PD escort him and Leni back. It will take about an hour though.

Image

Mick would rather do it on his own. Leni walks by Mick, heading to the ladies room. Mick gets off the phone and follows her in.

Image

I love that he walks right into the ladies room. Obviously Leni has become important to him.

Looks like Leni has a bit of morning sickness. He asks if she's okay.

Image

She says she's almost three months. It's suppose to get better. Mick tells her it's all going to get better. Leni asks him if he has kids. Mick gives a little laugh and says 'no'.

Image

Image

Image

Leni says maybe, if it's a boy, she'll name the baby Mick.

Image

Mick says she should name the baby Jack, Jack's a good name. Leni begins to cry a little. Can you blame her? I wanted to cry.

Image

Image

Leni tells Mick that she wants justice for Jack. She's obviously scared and begins to walk away. Mick stops her.

Image

He tells her that if she comes with him, he'll protect them both.

Image

She agrees.

Yes, I did notice that, dsr. I thought it was become he was a little overwhelmed. He had misjudged her for one. He was startled that he'd overlooked it and I think he was impressed with her.

And there's the money shot. Love the emotion that moves across his face when Leni asks if he has any kids.
Such a wistful expression.

That whole scene is just divine. I still can't believe SciFi cut it (are they insane?). Beautiful screen caps, GA.

I wanted to mention, while we were still at the Victorville diner, the way in which the window blinds, shadows, and even the wire cover of the fan in the foreground while Mick is on the phone give that "noir-ish" confined feel to the scene. Mick is often, especially in these first episodes, surrounded and captured within metal frames, much as his life is confined and constrained by the demands of his nature.
