That was a close call, wasn't it? Like Beth, I didn't get the significance of the 'collar' until the end. Even knowing about vampires, this kind of situation is so bizarre.
The waiter returned bearing the discreet black box, and she held her breath as Josef’s cold fingers fastened the collar around her neck.

“Now you’re mine,” a low voice whispers into the back of her neck, and then he’s gone, his face hidden by the crowd.
I could actually feel his cold fingers and hear that voice. It made me shiver.

Are we maybe seeing into the future of The Other Side of Never (Part 10: The Claiming)? LOL

you best be hiding your face Josef....or Beth will read your heart in your eyes!

Luxe, Luxe...your writing is my tub of mocha/almond ice cream! Decadant, sinful and really satisfying...

Hi Luxe deLuxe --

I'm not a JoBe girl -- not by a long shot -- but this was interesting. I like the idea of the jewelry playing such a significant role in the scheme of things. I do wonder what the housekeeper's true motivation was in rushing Beth downstairs. That was odd, but Josef handled the situation as usual. I guess dinner is served, huh?

Back for a reread (thanks Moonlighter!)

I love this story... and you'll all notice that Josef's marker is a HUUUUUGE diamond collar, not some mingy little ruby earrings, or a stupid butterfly, but ROWS and ROWS of diamonds.

How completely Kostan. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

Wonderful.

This brings out clearly just how different vampire society is. Small things are symbolic and very significant--this little story brings out that fact clearly and chillingly. Beth was almost refreshments for the guests, but in her defense, Josef should have explained in more detail.

That being said, this lesson probably brought it home to her with more force than a casual description.

I wonder how Mick will react if he comes to the party later.

Thanks!

Jenna

Owo, Luxe, you did that in a 2 hours challenge? Such a dark, dominative part of the vamp world, kind of shivering even for Beth's measures..you got me shivering, at least!

I remember this.

Chilling.

At this point, Beth is clearly the one who screwed up here. She should know by now that it is dangerous to forget the details around the vampires.

It only the heartstopping events of this evening stopped here...

You write a wonderful story.

Wow! This is the second time recently I've been thinking about an older story without knowing the author or title only to have it suddenly appear on the active thread! :2eyes:

Loved the reread of this one. I really like the idea of jewelry as markers for the different vamps. Thanks!

Thanks MLC! I rewrote this one as The Invitation - so this one's easy to get a bit mixed up about.
